Yoruba Youths Kick Against Oyo Speaker As Makinde's Successor by LifestyleTonite(op): 12:36pm On Apr 09, 2025
Yoruba youths on social media have voiced their opposition to a likely governorship candidacy of the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin.

Drama began after Ogundoyin shared a photo with a man who identified himself as the Eze Ndigbo 1 of Yorubaland during the coronation of the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade.

In the caption, Ogundoyin stated that the legislative arm of the Oyo State Government under him is "dedicated to creating laws that benefit everyone, regardless of backgrounds and tribes."

This didn't sit well with many Yoruba youths who voiced their displeasure that he associated with someone who called himself an Eze (King) in Yorubaland, even at the Alaafin's coronation.

They also accused the speaker of inviting the Eze to Alaafin's coronation, just as they dug into his lineage and discovered that his mother is an Igbo woman.

The youths also dug out a post in which Ogundoyin admitted to not being fluent in Yoruba, the language spoken by the people he represents.

They became angrier after discovering that he's reportedly being prepared to take over from Governor Seyi Makinde in 2027.

Ogundoyin immediately deleted the post that accompanied a photo with the Eze, and issued a statement on X to assert his Yorubanness.

He said, "I am a proud Yoruba man from Eruwa. I speak Yoruba with pride and I conduct and promote plenary sessions in Yoruba. I speak fluent Yoruba and English. I cherish and promote our rich cultural heritage. My wife is Yoruba and equally shares my passion for our roots.

"My late Mum, Chief Mrs. Justina Iyabo Ogundoyin, who was born and raised in Ibadan, embraced Yoruba culture and virtues from birth. This earned her several Yoruba traditional titles including Yeyeluwa of Ibadanland, Iyaloja of Ibarapaland and acting Iyaloja General of Oyo State before her demise.

"As Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, my loyalty and commitment are unwavering in my service to my people in Oyo State."

Regardless, the youths, motivated by a new wave of Yoruba conservatism, warned that he would lose re-election into the Oyo Assembly.

Meanwhile, a news media @Oyoaffairs, decided to test the waters to see if the outrage against Ogundoyin had subsided.

The platform ran a campaign on X, with the caption, "Who Should Succeed Seyi Makinde in 2027? Series 6: Meet Eruwa-Born 37-Year-Old Adebo Ogundoyin."

However, the campaign was met with resentment from many Yoruba youths on social media who say they will rather vote for the opposition if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) fields Ogundoyin as governorship candidate in 2027.

Reacting, an X user, @Asakemijimi, said, "Lol. Field him, and PDP is gone in Oyo state. We will be waiting for you people. We are even tired of PDP and their anti-Yoruba policies and pro-igbo policies."

@Kilabake said, "If PDP wants continuity in Oyo State, they should look for a proper Yoruba candidate void of offence."

@MichaelAkinsuyi said, "If opposition presents full-blooded Yoruba, we will go for it. Yoruba first in everything. Enough of half-baked Yorùbá b@st@rds in our political system."

@Novelgreen1 said, "This one he won't smell the position. @Adebo_ogund never again will his likes be allowed to represent Yoruba. This one that is already romancing Benjamin Kalu to create Igbo communities in Oyo State. The next thing is to divert Oyo resources to Imo State like Betty did in Ondo."

The same wave has been against the reported governorship ambition of Amofin Beulah Adeoye in Oyo State.

According to the wave, Beulah has an Igbo wife and gave his children non-Yoruba first names.

They stated that they rejected him because they don't want a repeat of what Ondo State people experienced under Betty Akeredolu, an Igbo woman who was their First Lady.

That's their problem. Yoruba people are saying no to half-breeds who show no loyalty to Yoruba interests.

Don't gaslight us to accept what others reject in their own land.

Eye don open.

The Eze Ndigbo of Yorubaland stunt at Alaafins coronation was a very big insult.
Yorubaland doesn't do Ezes and even in Igboland no Eze has authority over a state talk less of the Homeland of an entire Ethnic group

It was provocative

He should reverse it

Yoruba children (I am purposely using this word) need to calm down.

Being Yoruba has always been more than where one of your parents come from....or are these kids going to claim they are more Yoruba than Sango or Priestess Wenger?

Historically we've never acted insecure and should not start acting like any other insecure ethnic group.
