Today, I had an unsettling experience in court with Justice Musa Suleiman Liman of the Federal High Court in Abuja. He seemed unaware that a QR code represents an air ticket and was unfamiliar with AI glasses.

He also did not realize that these glasses could be medicated and even prescribed.

Additionally, he was not informed that one can book an appointment with a doctor via an app without knowing the specific doctor until the date of the visit, which may result in a different doctor from the same team attending to you. This situation arose during a case that the Police brought forth concerning IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s illegal position as Inspector General of Police.

I argued that he is illegally occupying this role, as he is supposed to retire in 2024.

Unfortunately, the judge’s cynicism turned what should have been a serious discussion into a farcical display of analog reasoning related to what ought to be a serious trial relating to “cybercrime.”

How do you as a judge sit over Cybercrime case when you have no knowledge of the cyber world?

Honestly many of this old people holding critical position should go and upgrade. Since they womt go for workshop, they prefer to loot and lavish fund meant to upgrade thr skills

The truth is, go to any part of Nigeria, and ask people about what AI is, what is a QR code, and what glasses can do these days, and they won't be able to tell you.

A judge in Nigeria is mostly above 50. By the time he was in law school, there were no computers in the class, no internet, nothing. BY the time they start working, there would be no computers, no internet, etc.

AI is even something many people know. I am very internet savvy, and I only got to know about AI some two years ago, and even myself, I don't know everything.

Also, while internet penetrance in this country has improved, it has not improved enough to affect everyone.

Yesterday, my mother called me and wanted me to check a shop near my working place for the price of a BP monitor. I just told her I can check it on Jumia, and I did. Simple and short.

The truth is, if you are over 50, unless you live or do a lot of business oversease, or unless your job forces you to use the internet like in banking and academics, you are not going to be internet savvy. And if you live in a country like NIgeria, Sowore's glasses are not going to be of use to you. We are not that internet connected.

And legal systems around the world are struggling to catch up with the internet. In spain, someone used AI to create indeecent images of his female classmates. Initially the judge did not know how to procced because there was nothing in the law books that covered for a crime like that. (Eventually a conviction was secured based on an archaic electronic transfer law).

Any judge that's handling cyber crime case suppose to upgrade himself on cyber space. That's why Lawers are called learned people .

1..Most judges are old. When he was training he probably won't have seen a computer . That was the norm until 20 years ago.

2. Many of them probably are still coming to terms with the computer.

3. Even abroad, there is the issue of judges and laws not coming to.terms.wiith the internet and how it works

4. AI has even made matters worse.

5. Sowore lives mostly in the states where he has access to latest tech. Here in Nigeria, the tech he describes would only be accessible to rich people.
6. Most Nigerians are not tech savvy. Even now most of us don't know what ai or qr code is.
