Passengers aboard a train travelling from Warri to Itakpe were left stranded in a remote forest in Kogi State on Tuesday after the locomotive reportedly broke down mid-journey, forcing commuters to trek for hours to safety, Times of Nigeria reports.

Among the stranded passengers was Marxist activist, Kola Edokpayi, who documented the ordeal in a video shared on social media. Edokpayi, who was en route to Abuja, said the train developed a fault in what he described as an “evil forest” with no mobile network coverage.

“We became apprehensive,” he said. “We were stranded in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by forest and with no idea how long the repair would take. So, we decided to start trekking.”

The passengers reportedly embarked on an hours-long walk through the bush in search of the nearest station or settlement.

The area, known to be frequented by armed herders, raised safety concerns among the commuters.

However, Edokpayi praised the Fulani herders they encountered, saying they were surprisingly helpful and guided the passengers through the forest.

“Contrary to the fear many of us had, they showed kindness and helped us navigate,” he said.

He called on the Federal Government to improve the maintenance of rail transport and enhance safety measures for passengers.

“Airlines cancel flights without notice, roads are unsafe due to kidnappers, and now trains are breaking down in forests. May God continue to help us in this country,” he lamented.

The incident has renewed public concerns over rail safety, coming three years after the March 2022 Abuja-Kaduna train attack, where gunmen killed eight people and abducted over 60 passengers.

That tragedy prompted widespread outrage and raised questions about the security of the country’s rail system.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation is yet to release an official statement on Tuesday’s incident as of press time.

To trek is exercise and exercise is good for the body.

In our daddy Tinubu's regime, every Nigerian must be fit.

What do you mean? Trains break down every day all over the world.

There was no crash. Passengers were all safe.

They even met Fulani herders, expecting to be slaughtered, only to be shown love. So there is a silver lining in that cloud, too.

If you people want a perfect society where nothing unfortunate happens, go to heaven. The thing you are looking for, you will see it there.

If they explain Nigeria to you and you understand it, you should be checked into a psychiatric hospital, it actually takes a lot of damage to one's mental capacity to understand what exactly is happening in this country.
Absolutely nothing can be said to be working well

Thank God they trekked to safety though

What's the difference between Fulani herders and Fulani herdsmen?

Both terms mean the same thing!

Are you aware that 99.9% of Fulani herdsmen have never hurt a single soul in their lives?

The way you people look at them, no one would believe they are the same people that provide your daily meat and shaki - all 250 million of you.

That does not mean, you BIGOT, that all, or most herdsmen are killers.

Do you know there are over 4 MILLION Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria?

I repeat, 99.9% of Fulani herdsmen, that group of people that supply 250 million of you your daily meat, shaki, and pomo, are INNOCENT, HARDWORKING MEN.

So stop being a BIGOT based on what you saw in the news.

This train keeps breaking down.
A friend of mine had similar experience on last Sunday. They were stranded in the middle of the forest for hours until another locomotive was sent to them

Trains are not meant to break down in the 21st century but don't rule out human error, load issues and lack of maintenance

shocked

Thank God for their safety.

Emergency plan for such scenario must have been considered and activated. Passengers should not be trekking through the forest considering the security situation of Nigeria.

The railway company should pay compensation

Anything? Just one thing huh

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Chief Olawale Edun has said the last time Nigeria’s economy looked stable was about a decade ago.

He made this statement during his maiden press conference as Minister of Finance where he outlined President Bola Tinubu’s vision, agenda and strategy for the economy.

He said, “I think as we all know, we are not where we should be. The economy is barely growing above the rate of population growth.

“But it was not always so, and I think in trying to look at the way forward, if we now have a situation of slow growth, double-digit inflation, weak/depreciating exchange rate, as well as security concerns that are resulting in an economy that is not growing and not taking Nigerians out of poverty.

“If we think back to the last time when the economy was stable- when it was growing, when inflation was low, and the interest rate was affordable, that period was about a decade ago. Growth was about 6% in 2013 and 2014.”
Private sector to drive the economy

Herdsmen are now being helpful or are they the new police in the forests?

Meanwhile, the train looks like a rejected product of the West.
