The Senator representing Anambra Central in the National Assembly, Victor Umeh, says the Supreme Court judgement on the Labour Party (LP) leadership crisis has shut the door on Julius Abure as the party’s chairman.

Umeh said that Abure should take the admonishment of the apex court and humbly bow out.

“The door has been shut on him (Abure), and the only thing left to him is for him to reflect over the admonishment given to him by the Supreme Court that officers of a party should be humble enough to leave office when their tenure expires,” Umeh said on the programme.

“His tenure has expired, he knows it, and he is in breach of an agreement which became a consent judgement of the Federal High Court that he should do the following things, and he refused to do them. From that time till today, Abure has not held any congress anywhere.”

The LP Senator also advised Abure to take the olive branch from Senator Nenadi Usman’s National Caretaker Committee of the party to join the process again if he thinks the party people love him and want him to continue as chairman.

He said Abure cannot make himself chairman without going through the process to get him reelected. Senator Umeh said that Abure should have taken his wise counsel based on his experience of many years as the chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for many years.

The lawmaker said that he saw the situation coming and advised Abure but was dismissed by the embattled LP chieftain.

The Labour Party (LP) has been embroiled in leadership tussle pitching Abure and members of his cabinet against Nenadi Usman’s Caretaker Committee constituted by the party’s presidential candidate in 2023, Peter Obi, Governor Alex Otti and other elected officials of the party.

This is the problem that people talked about. You, Obi, Otti and others came from nowhere to join LP. They supported you guys to elective positions. Suddenly now, you all push them out, replace their positions and turn around to debate them. You see why our political parties is intolerant to changes because of sabours

Abure that Peter Obi brought to limelight decided to go and be collecting fifty million for back. I hope they continue paying him the fifty million.

Abure is locus classicus that when you take in a homeless dog and feed it, it would gather enough strength to fight you and chase you out of your house.

This guy was sidelined in campaign finances and organization during the presidential elections. The core Labour Party publicity team was undermined. A new treasurer with zero political mobilization experience was brought in. We even heard that support groups in Plateau state were not given mobilization. After elections, they wanted the man out.

That was unfair to Abure.

I think Abure should bow out now and enjoy his life. Let those who have demonstrated gross incompetence in managing election campaigns, publicity and post-election litigation be allowed to run the party. They mismanaged elections because they spent more money on post-election litigations than the election itself. These people lack competence to manage a party as they are mostly outsiders and defectors. Abure, leave the party for them and watch it collapse.
