The Yobe State Government has announced plans to reintegrate former Boko Haram members who have undergone the De-radicalisation, Rehabilitation and Reintegration program under Operation Safe Corridor.

The State Governor, Mai Buni disclosed this on Thursday during a meeting with OPSC representatives led by Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, in Damaturu, the state capital.

Buni acknowledged the devastating impact of the 15-year insurgency, which has claimed thousands of lives, destroyed properties, and displaced many households.

He emphasised the need for a non-kinetic approach to address the root causes of the insurgency, recognising that not all Boko Haram members joined willingly.

The governor gave assurance of his administration’s commitment to adopting and implementing OPSC recommendations to achieve the desired objectives.

Bunmi also appreciated President Bola Tinubu’s multifaceted approach to ending insurgency and major crimes in the North.

“We shared the belief that some individuals were conscripted into the insurgency through force or indoctrination.

“With sustained efforts, they can repent, rehabilitate and return to normal life as responsible citizens.

“The state government is committed to reintegrating repentant insurgents, with 390 set to graduate from the DRR program between April 14 and 19, including 54 Yobe indigenes.

“The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management will oversee the reintegration process.”

Speaking, Gen. Musa stressed the importance of community involvement in sustaining the reintegration process, highlighting that de-radicalization is an ongoing effort requiring community-level support.

He also appealed for expanded de-radicalization centers, vocational training facilities, and modern equipment to enhance rehabilitation.

“With your support, those who observe the positive changes in the lives of ex-members will be encouraged to surrender willingly,” he said.

Step by step, can they explain deradicalization of a terrorist?

A requirement for being a terrorist is a commitment to die. If they did not die while killing others, what is the rationale of not helping them keep their wishes?

I think it is unfair to the families of those murdered by terrorists to be deradicalizing terrorists and reintegrating them into society. Terrorism is like a fanatical intimacy with religion or alcohol or gambling or stealing. It has no cure. The best and cheap cure is helping these people meet their lord the devil.

How much is usually spent on deradicalization?

The so called De-radicalization is always difficult in the midst of harsh economic realities. Hence they always relapse back into the Sambisa forest. And this is even made worse by lack of any concrete plans to curb out-of-school children menace in the region.

Imagine if the Almajiri Education Scheme of the Jonathan regime had been followed through since 2015. Imagine the numbers that would have been impacted by now, but the leaders in the region have continued the old ways of deliberately leading a less educated masses to keep them aligned. It is sad.

The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The next best time is now.

There's no need wasting the lives of our soldiers if all we'll keep hearing is rehabilitation of terrorists (only for them to backslide) and hardly ever any news of prosecution talk less of conviction. There's a fúcking problem in this country and we need to start asking questions cool
