A member of the Governing Board of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Rep. Sam Onuigbo, has dismissed claims by senior lawyer Monday Ubani, SAN, that the Umuahia-Ikwuano-Ikot Ekpene federal highway has been abandoned.

Onuigbo addressed these allegations during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday. He criticised Ubani’s petition to President Bola Tinubu dated 7 April 2025, which claimed the Trunk A road linking Abia and Akwa Ibom states was impassable due to neglected construction.

Onuigbo described Ubani’s claims as false, revealing that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had approved an additional £14.37 billion on 3 February 2025 to continue the project.

He reported progress, including the completion of 8.42 kilometres of severely damaged sections since June 2023, along with 4.47 kilometres of concrete works and drainage. In the first quarter of 2025, an additional 880 metres of asphalt binder, 3.22 kilometres of wearing course, and 1.53 kilometres of concrete drains were finished.


“Ubani’s suggestion of abandonment, just two months after FEC approval, is misleading and ignores the significant progress made despite logistical and environmental challenges,” Onuigbo stated.

He accused Ubani of political motives, noting that the lawyer had made similar false allegations in 2021 and 2023. Onuigbo suggested that Ubani’s focus on the project was an attempt to gain political advantage.

He reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to infrastructure development under the Renewed Hope Agenda, urging stakeholders to dismiss Ubani’s claims.

Onuigbo called for accurate progress reports from the Federal Ministry of Works, emphasising that the road project remains on track despite challenges.

“We encourage stakeholders to ignore false narratives aimed at discrediting the Tinubu administration. The project is progressing, and no amount of negative rhetoric will hinder its success,” Onuigbo declared.

Because wetin concern the NEDC with that particular road except if the Hon. member is not speaking from his capacity as NEDC governing member and if so, the author doesn't need to include in the post

Don't blame him, let him complain...Their villages are less than 20 mins apart. He knows what he is saying....

The road is still in bad shape. What is mentioned appear to be "just audio talk". The actual actions for the road repairs are desired now and should be adequately supervised to ensure and assure high quality works are done for its durability.

When Buhari was the president he focus his road construction only in the North and carry Southwest along. No federal road in Akwa Ibom State was completed.

Now Tinubu is Focussing his own road construction only in the west then carried North along. Even the so call Lagos Calabar High Way is from Lagos and may not reach our side except on media and during campaign.

This country is very funny. They want every state to start demanding for president of their own tribe.
All the railway contacts non has reach Akwa Ibom even as we are the highest producer of crude oil. Buhari preferred to construct railway in Sambisa forest and Niger Republic than to bring it down South where the security is guaranteed.
Tinubu is towing that part. We are watching last we will demand that presidency should be rotating by tribe and not by North and South.

He was not speaking in his capacity as a Board member but as a member of the APC and one from that LGA.

If not for foolishness and some selfish interest how can onuigbo claim there is meaningful progress on that road. I went just few weeks ago and the rains have started. The road is going back to it's bad shape.
Only I caterpillar and like 3 men digging everyday for few hours and you wonder what they came to do.
The contractor is not capable of handling such road. Onuigbo suppose chop slap for capping nonsense... He should go to ikwuano and say this and get his people's reaction...

I passed through that road to and from Uyo, and the journey was hellish, nothing to be proud of there.

There are over 500 tribes in Nigeria.

It might take 2000 years before it reaches your turn.
