SifonAbasi:
Firstly I want to thank people like webbxxpert, online4business, coputa and dauntless15 for their advice on my previous thread.

Last year I created a thread that I was tired seeing my brother staying at home doing nothing then I suggested he learned a skill. He chose animation. I contacted some animation schools and their fees were high so I went online and saw animation courses for as low as N3000.
First I purchased an online course from a Lagos based 3D person for him at the cost of N15000. I gave the man my brother's email and the files were sent to him. According to my brother, he didn't really understood some topics there and most times he had to contacted the person who sold the course to explain explain to him but he still didn't get it. He told me how some topics were very complex.

In October last year I bought foreign online courses for him though expensive but not as expensive as the animation schools I visited.
He started learning and according to him the foreign courses were quite explanatory that he didn't have to contact the people for help. He also learnt some from YouTube.

Starting from January this year he began to apply for jobs and to God's glory he is getting jobs and being paid in dollars.
His challenge now is laptop. The laptop he is using he said it's not strong to carry the load.
So please can someone here help me recommend a pocket friendly laptop that can do 3D animations. Thank you all.
This is good and i m happy for him too.
Please i need that foreign online courses you bought for him, how can i get it plz? I just start learning the 3D animation last week

A desktop is better as it is cheaper and can be easily upgraded. However you will have to buy a ups. A very good ups because pcs with gpus draw power.

3D works demand high computing power. You certainly need a desktop built for that purpose. You can also buy the following and build the desktop yourself.

1. Window 11
2. 1Tb hard disk
3. 32gb Ram
4. I 7 processor 16core/32 thread. Above 3.0 ghz
5. Graphics card 8gb Ram
6. 2560 x 1440 display
7. RTX 4080 or RTX 3080 Ti Graphic card or
8. NVIDIA GeForce 400 and newer, Quadro Tesla GPU architecture and newer, including RTX-based cards
9. 3 button mouse
10. Open GPU 4.0 or directx
11. Solid state drive (SSD)/instead of Hard disk drive HDD.

It will cost you money but it is worth the investment.

Nice one!
I'm always fascinated with 3D animation!
Just a question....which platform can I use between Maya and 3D max for animation?
Secondly, which spec of laptop or computer system will be better suited for these heavy software programs?

Zackattack:
Here’s why👇
In graphics and motion graphics design, the ability to preview your work and render in real time is key. The graphics card is responsible for this.
External graphic cards are the real deal with 3D designs and modeling. Laptops cannot install external graphics card that are not factory produced.
Most of these graphics cards are so powerful and even more expensive than the computer. With a compatible desktop, one can easily make upgrades.
Video editors, motion graphics designers and light 3D creators use laptop, but heavy 3D creation are mostly done with desktop because of the ability to install an external high end graphics card that will enable fast preview and rendering.
op listen to this advice from this guy very important I don't think you can afford alienware laptop or pavilion gaming desktop simply because of GPU and SSD

there is no "pocket friendly laptop" these days because of the price of dollars.

the type of laptop or desktop you looking should have the following features:

1. Minimum 2GB Nvidia graphics card

2. Minimum 16GB RAM

3. Minimum 500GB Hard drive (Recommended 1T)

will cost nothing less than 250k for 2nd hand

Re: My Brother's 3D Animation Journey. Recommend A Good Laptop Pease by GloriousGbola: 12:14pm On Apr 12, 2025
So @op

You want a workstation laptop or a gaming laptop

Those cost anything from 500 to 3m depending on specs and if they are used or brand new

Can your budget carry it?

I needed to get some low cost 3d capable devices and I found lenovo think centre m75q1

Ryzen 3400ge.

3.3 ghz. Put in a ssd, max out the ram (I put 32gb) and you should be fine. Also it is strongly recommended that you get a 135 charger to go with it. The standard 65w charger apparently throttles the cpu

The ryzen 3400g is an apu which means that it will use system ram for graphics. So you want as much ram as possible. It also supports two drives one nvme and one 2.5 disk.

Close eye and get a better laptop. This is animation we are talking about. Pocket friendly laptop won't cut it. What is worth doing is worth doing well.

Using myself as an example, I have been using one laptop since 2016 cuz I know how to maintain things very well. I can use one thing for 10 years and it will still be functioning. Maintenance is key.

So, I have been using this laptop called HP Pavilion DM4 since 2016 till date. It has 4GB RAM with 512GB ROM. But I can tell you for free, at some point it started lagging due to the small RAM space.

I kept managing it cuz I cherished the laptop a lot. It started making work so difficult for me due to the slow and lagging behaviour. Well once it starts lagging, I will launch Ccleaner and clean off some obsolete files. This will make it to run smoothly for some time.

After sometime, I decided to upgrade the 4GB RAM to 6GB RAM. By the time I was done with the upgrade, my bouncing baby boy started running smoothly again. But unknown to me that was temporary cuz the laptop was due for replacement. Oldage has caught up with it.

I couldn't cope with the lagging and slow loading. I vex and started researching for a better machine of 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD Space and 8GB graphic space, 2 in 1 Convertible with screen touch, with long lasting battery, and I got this rugged, very sleek, Dell Latitude 7200 cuz HP laptop batteries don't last long.

When I tell you that this laptop is a machine, I am not joking. The battery lasts for good 8-10 hours. Unlike HP laptops that don't last pass 4hours.

At a click, every app opens without stress. Work becomes very smooth. And this cost me ₦590k.

So, I will advise you to get a better laptop. A cheap laptop with low RAM will make work difficult and unbearable for him.

Try and get something with better RAM, at least a laptop with 16GB RAM is a no bargainer for your brother kind of work.

You see laptops are good only for learning purpose and although there are good laptops that can handle blender real good for professional works
But it all balls down to the graphic card and processor because from my experience, desktop computer with the latest graphic card will help boost his creativity to the next level.
And also as he begins to get advanced in blender he will start building way advanced models that require high computing performance machine that's why I recommend desktop computer.
I will advice you to talk to him to look into game development as well let him learn UGE and if he can master the both I assure you that guy will help financially to the family with his skills.

Your brother is already doing well as a 3D modeler, he's actually good with blender ... but he needs an high end laptop to render his model in corona, redshift, iray, vray for more realistic look, blender cycles takes longer to render and eeve on the other hand doesn't render like cycle.

Also he needs a mentor.

Why is that, and what have you trasitioned to?
I've been dabbling a little, I do UI and UX, elementor and Shopify, 3D sculpting, illustration, flutter development so I could create the app I always wanted to create, also a little bit of coding, just focused on making my social media full of artistic creations and projects instead of actively chasing clients or job I hustle a different way then do all the art for fun.

If you have the money then go for Maya or 3Dmax or cinima4D that's if you can afford buying the software. But blender on the other hand is 100% free.

Congrats on the progress, as for the laptop, he can look for all those ones with gtx1060 to start with, remember it's not ideal for high end animation as I'd recommend an rtx laptop if money isn't a problem, but since he's short on funds just look for a graphics card laptop that has ample ram, or get a desktop so he can be upgrading the components one by one until he gradually has a machine capable of rendering stuff, a laptop isn't upgradable most times, but desktop you can upgrade any component in a desktop, he'd be fine.
I appreciate your comment.

Okay so a question for you before we proceed.
Do you have the latest versions of those softwares?.
If you have the latest version then the version of software you have will determine the study route to take.
