The federal government has entered into a $328.81 million agreement with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) aimed at enhancing electricity supply across Nigeria.
As reported by NAN, the contract encompasses engineering, procurement, construction, and financing for the rollout of transmission lines under phase one of the “presidential power initiative (PPI)”.

During the signing event in Abuja on Wednesday, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu stated that CMEC would play a central role in executing the project.

He mentioned that the firm’s tasks would involve refurbishing and constructing “330 kilovolt (kV)” and “132kV” transmission lines.

Adelabu noted that the “FGN Power Company”, a federal government-established “special purpose vehicle (SPV)”, would oversee the execution of the initiative.

He explained that the project was structured to boost grid capacity and eliminate wasted potential, highlighting that it had been split into two critical segments.

According to him, “Priority one includes seven brownfield and 10 greenfield lines, totaling 544 kilometers with a load capacity of 7,140 megawatts.”

“These vital infrastructure projects will serve as the arteries to carry increased power generated through mid-stream transmission directly to homes, businesses, and industries powering our economy.

“This project is not an isolated effort. It is strategically designed to complement ongoing mid-stream transmission enhancements. Our vision is holistic—from generation to the last mile of distribution.

“By upgrading and expanding the transmission network,” he added, Nigeria would be directly tackling a major challenge within its power sector.

Adelabu emphasized that resolving such bottlenecks would lead to more reliable electricity for millions, spurring economic development, job creation, and improved living conditions.

“Today’s signing is a tangible demonstration of the federal government’s unwavering commitment, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, to deliver stable and reliable power to all Nigerians,” he said.

“We are determined to eliminate the obstacles that have hindered past progress and build a 21st-century-ready power sector.”

Also speaking at the event, Kenny Anuwe, Managing Director of “FGN Power Company”, underlined the need to modernize the transmission infrastructure in order to deliver electricity where it is most needed.

“At FGN Power Company, our mandate is clear: to deliver improved power supply to all Nigerians. A robust and reliable transmission network is the backbone of a stable power sector,” Anuwe said.

He described the alliance with CMEC as a well-thought-out strategy to reinforce the country’s transmission framework, ensuring that investments in electricity generation lead to meaningful improvements for citizens.

A very good development, since TCN has been unbundled into two, while the Transmission Service Provider (TSP) will now primarily be in charge of transmission towers, power lines and substations. The synergy between the FGN power company, TCN and the Chinese company is coming at a very critical point to ensure power upgrade and improvement. The 36 states Governors also signed an MoU with another Chinese company for renewable energy. We must get our power sector right this time.

God bless His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR)

In the face of never-to-do-well haters, Asiwaju keeps slapping them with wins!

No doubt at this point. The future is bright. At this pace, we can be competing with China in the very near future.

God bless Nigeria!

Decentralize transmission and distribution, any region that vandalizes their own should bear the consequences alone. I don't enjoy this present scenario where somebody will vandalize power infrastructure in zamfara and I will be suffering it in Benin city, or somebody vandalizes it in Rivers state and somebody in kano will be suffering it embarassed

ANYTIME I SEE THE NAME CHINA, I KNOW IT WILL WORK.

One thing you can say about China regarding their projects in Nigeria so far, is that they ALWAYS deliver.

No long stories, like European mago-mago, Jibiti companies.

The chinese are treating us like their slaves doing us anyhow to our people that got employed under them in this country, this is because the lack of production that Nigeria cannot do on their own that they have to rely on other countries, ok agreed you have to depend on foreign countries on some projet but atleast can we shift our direction away from Chinese and applying brakes on the way they invest so that we can gain some sort of respect.

I agree that Nigeria should not be learning from Egypt; Nigeria should learn from the Ivory Coast, which is blessed with 11,000 MW.

No President in the world can 'give' 24hrs electricity to all Nigerians in 4 years. Let's be realistic. Even a country like India doesn't have 24hr electricity across the country.

To generate power and distribute it through new or even refurbished transmission infrastructure takes several years. To do it on the sort of scale that'll guaranty 24hr electricity in Nigeria will take at least 15 years. And that's 15 years of spending about $4 billion dollars every year.

Even if you bring the Chinese President on secondment to govern Nigeria. He won't be able to do it because Nigerian politicians at all levels steal too much. Well, may be if he brings his firing squad with him from China and send all thieving Nigerian politicians to the gulag, then the money might be available.

Nigeria has under invested in power for over 40 years. There can be no miracle in 4years.

If the government can improve things significantly, and all future administrations continue to invest heavily in power infrastructure, only then can Nigeria dream of 24hrs power supply.
