A bill to increase maternity leave from 12 weeks to 24 weeks (or six months)has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

Everything is geared to favor women. From the right of a girl child to that of grown women. I haven't seen any advocacy to protect the interest of men, even a boy child. And it's men that are making these laws.

Maternity leave favours the child the most, very critical in child development and for better start in life.

Companies will hardly employ women now.
Imagine someone on your payroll doing nothing for 2 years in the name of maternity leave.
Some of them gets pregnant again before two years; so basically in 6yrs, some of them only worked 2yrs yet received full 6yrs payments..

It will affect women eventually..

I remember when I was breast feeding my son .he will stretch his hand and be touching my face.

Then I will put his feet in my mouth.

You will think he is sleeping but once nipple leaves his mouth by mistake,his eyes will open and shine and a cry will follow.
That was the best experience I have ever had in my entire life.

I sha wish my mother or mother-in-law made ofe nsala for me (do oyinbos belief in pepper soup for women that just delivered??) or someone was there to press my belly or tie my belle. I was 19.

It was only me,with a husband that was always travelling in a foreign country.

And a Christian sister that use to occasionally visit.

Maternity leave is needed

And paternity leave is a week and sometimes none existent in many organizations.

This will make it difficult for married women to get work in private sectors. 6months is too much

Maternity in every civilised world is minimum of 6 months full pay.

Most people complaining here have no clue what a woman's body go through to bring forth a child.

Majority are not married so they will never understand.

They need to put a protection clause because i see Nigerian Bosses sacking their staff on maternity leave because they have gotten a better staff.

2years? The org shld set their standard & margin on how u control birth also, if u don't like, then don't take the offer

Please men should stand up and get laws in their favor if they feel they are being sidelined. Rather than put up complaints anytime they notice something being done for women.

This is a very good move.

If this bill sees the light, the only bad side is that women would struggle a lot to get employment in private firms

Six months ke? People will stop employing women oh.

Do we need the duration to be enforced by law? Is the government going to be involved in the payment of the allowances? I would expect companies to give reasonable time for maternity at least 3 months to enable the mother recover.
The law they should be concerned about is that companies gives new mothers maternity leave to enable them recover and bond with the child

24 weeks,6 months meaning half a year of no work,but steady salary income.
I swear na soft life some women come.
But then,when are they going to start giving we men paternity leave?

This bill is trash! It'll only encourage unproductivity in the system!

You see, when you fill up women in almost every organization, you should also take into cognizance the impact of the maternity leaves on their productivity. Since retirement age in the country is just 60years, I don't think taking 24weeks maternity leave per birth is good for our economy.
