most nigerians have not learnt energy management. a hotel with AC on all the time will draw power, no way about it. people abroad are actually very deliberate about devices they use for this reason.

keep in mind that anyone who is bypassing meter is the reason fro crazy bills, what he does not pay is passed to someone else.
The hotel guy in question didn't bypass. They somehow removed the meter and he is paying way less than what he consumes. Just like every other person on estimated billing.
I agree with your last paragraph. Almost everyone not on meter is cheating the system. Guess who is paying for the losses? Band A customers. We are made to pay ours+ that of four other people.

i am an engineer. an electrical engineer by training. i have worked on multiple projects and i have witnessed the greed and laziness of your average nepa official first hand. nepa will tell you to pay for transformer for your site. and after will also tell you that by law the transformer is the property of nepa and they can do what they want with it. [this is actually the case]. nepa will tell you to bring money for spare parts, etc - which is in their parts store.

the moment you are paying for a service, it is the responsibility of nepa workers to ensure up time. i was in a maintenance role for field facilities for 5 years and everyone had a direct line to our ceo. slack too much on repairs and my boss would catch it and it would cascade down to me.

but they are unionized, they are legcy nepa staff so here we are.

i had the exact same issue with some extra flavor six or so years before. so it is likely more common than you think. in fact i was disconnected for six months. they kept ignoring my emails because they wanted to shake me down. then one fine day i put their ceo and consumer protection council in copy of the mail and they started running around like headless chickens

as an electrical engineer, i can see the poor quality and dangerous work most of these guys do. things we would not accept in our own site or facility] and how they try to monetize everything. we have a site in ayobo. upgrade. it only has two phases coming in. we assumed the wire must have cut when entering site . we called the nepa guys. after wasting our time for two weeks, they came and confirmed that the problem was actually from them - their overhead line was delivering two instead of three phases to the area. they then wanted us to pay for it. ekedc workers wanted us to pay to repair an overhead line under their control.

that is the average disco worker for you in a nutshell
Good evening and trust your day went well sir. Please I need your advise as I'm having issues with EKEDC. My aunt was disconnected since August last year for owing about 500k. Now that she has gathered the money, the lawyer managing her apartment sent her a bill of over N1.2m today and she's confused as she has not had power supply on her prepaid for over year now. What do you advise sir?

the story is a little confusoimg

if she is on prepaid then she owes nothing as she would have been disconnectd

if she was on postpaid - she needs to gather her last bills

she should go to their office and first take it up there

if that doesnt work, then she needs to start sending emails to the officers covering her region so there is a paper trail

but it is very important that she can demonstrate when she was disconnected.
ekedc are chasing money so someone can disconnect you with expectation of settlement and still be billing you

Thanks for your response sir.
Apologies if I confused you.

She's on prepaid billing system and was disconnected last year. The lawyer sent a screenshot of a bill attached to her meter number yesterday and it's different from what's on the printout EKEDC gave her landlady as demand notice last year.

@bolded: Wow. The meter itself, the relay is faulty and the outstanding is based on negative reading.

She'll go their office . Thanks a lot sir.
