Akwa Ibom has always been one of the states with highest rate of HIV prevalence in Nigeria. The stigma and notoriety once ascribed to the virus and disease in the late 90s and 2000s waned off due to international aids and interventions, especially from the USA. As it is now that Trump has done his thing, prevalence might get higher if our government don't meet up with the challenge. HIV management and testing kits prices have shot up recently, something that was once free or almost free. CAUTION: Everyone should protect themselves as much as they can. |

Maintain confidentiality, stop be rascal with information no one ask you about. Nigeria is still under educated about the virus. Most of the reactive are caused by late stage infection or late discovery of the disease. Nigeria medical authorities should call her to order. Don’t mention State or name people can easily start stressing and stigmatizing. |

Shebi I have been saying it on this platform...! The spread of HIV/AIDS is already way out of hand in this nation, and we are all acting like it's nothing. Not to mention Hepatitis B, and the raging drug-resistant strain of Gonorrhea. Make una dey knack raw dey go! Soon, it will be 1 in every 10 persons with such deadly infections. With serious cutting in funding for the Meds, they will become highly expensive to manage, leading to higher mortality rates. You shouldn't even sleep with a girl or guy these days without certifying their Infection status... Not all condoms can guarantee your safety... No thanks to influx of fake shit into the nation. |

Those days when I was still practicing in 9ja, na so this yellow paws paw banny with a voluptuous arse came to my centre for her monthly CD4 and viral load test. Omo, since that day, na sofri sofri I dey run my things. The thing no dey show for face.... Another case was when a lady who came for delivery and we needed to prepare blood in case of an emergency, husband was to be the donor. After screening tests were conducted, wife was positive and husband was negative, how come? Na so matter cast that day. This was in Benin. Most people who live with this virus do not get to know early enough. Early is key to staying healthy... |

Chilipepper:That is not how it works. If you want to know the prevalence of HIV in Akwa Ibom, do a population based prevalence survey...ie do a multistage sampling method where you choose several LGA , choose some communites in each LGA, choose to test certain number of people, and then voluntarily counsel and test people. Hospital testing statistics CAN give us an idea of prevalence, but remember , people may be coming in from outside the hospital's catchment area for VCT, largely because of stigma. That can give the idea that in the vicinity of a hospital there are too many HIV Positive people.(Keep in mind also that people coming in for anything hiv can and do lie about their names and origin.) Problem with Nigeria is data not avaialble easily, It is too expensive to do a population based survey. Especially a statewide one (and Akwa Ibom is not too large....I tremble with fear if I was asked to do one in Kaduna state, or even Lagos state. |
