Doctors are not under a mandate to save lives. Yes, no law would jail a doctor for walking away from or refusing to see a patient. I just wanted you to know of this in case you have been operating under some past delusion that doctors are gods mandated by other gods to save your life, no matter what. They are human beings like you and me who make choices based on what benefits them the most. undecided

Calm down.
I have been reading your comments and I agreed with you until this.

I have 3 children.
1st pregnancy was a single birth.. Vaginal delivery
2nd pregnancy..a set of twins.C/S
My husband and I are medical doctors.
I worked all through both pregnancies and saved up money for MY delivery.
I only started maternity leave 3 weeks before my EDD.
Men are naturally very selfish people.

A reasonable woman should not put her hope on a man.
If women know how much their husbands hate them for real, they will love themselves more.
Husband is just waiting for you to die so he can marry a new wife.
Madam, with all due respect, I think you should be the one to calm down a bit more.

It is very obvious that you had a difficult and painful experience especially as a pregnant woman in NIGERIA having to save for her own delivery. At the very least, you should have been well-taken care of. That man is really selfish. It is a personality flaw and has little to do with his finances.

But I must say that your situation, as unfortunate as it is, should not be used as a blanket narrative for all men or marriages. It's not right and insulting to the vast responsible men in Nigeria.

That you married a selfish husband does not mean all men are the same. That is your personal reality, not the universal one. And truthfully, it sounds like you married a very unsuitable man. But that should not lead to the conclusion that “men are naturally selfish” or that most husbands hate their wives. That is a dangerous generalization.

I personally know, and I’m surrounded by men who take pride in taking care of their wives and families. I'm not talking about a performative or one-time thing. This is something that has been going on for decades. These men, many of whom are well-to-do, have stay-at-home wives, and they still shoulder all responsibilities joyfully, providing allowance, support, love, and emotional care. These women GLOW!

So if you’re consistently encountering selfish men, perhaps there’s something wrong in the kind of people you’re attracted to, or accepting. (I'll not be surprised if you're giving off the strong woman vibes too). But to project that onto all men is unfair to the countless husbands who are loving, supportive, and committed to their wives' well-being.

So please, your experience, while valid, is not the norm. And it shouldn’t be weaponized against men in general.

Thanks.

A hospital is an essential service, like a school, fire department, or police department. Funding for essential services should come from taxes, industry, and public-private partnerships. Nigeria can more than afford to provide good care for every person in the country, but it doesn't because of this:
Are you aware private hospitals are businesses? And are you aware federal and state governments are trying to monetize government hospitals?

Pregnancy is a 9-month gig during which those who are intentional would have not only prepared themselves for that final emergency to come but also done all necessary to ensure they are prepared as far as the bill to come. undecided

This here is a sad story indeed, but I can't really fault the hospital for choosing to protect its bottom line either. undecided
A quick one, my wife gave birth in FMC Abuja. We've paid for everything up front months before delivery. On day of delivery, around past 10 pm, the doctors said it's gonna be CS and we need to pay extra 600k or so. I have the money in an account where I can't do transfer. No ATM card. Nothing attached to that account. But I have a very reasonable amount of money there way more than they were asking for. Even my car is worth more than the money 38 times. These guys didn't proceed until I paid the full money. I had to call my brother that transferred me 1m just incase . I went ahead and paid, went to show the doctors the receipt of payment before they went ahead with the cs. That was on Friday night/ Saturday morning. Imagine I didn't have someone. Just imagine!!!!! And the money they're asking for is not a problem.

What are you even saying? Husband wants wife to die so they remarry ? And then wait for the new wife to die again just to continue with the circle? Lol

I think you're going through a lot in your marriage and I hope you get it fixed. Look for the loophole and do the needful. No man wants the wife to die. If there's no peace in the home, he moves out or start coming very late from work just to avoid issues

Let me tell you guys something. The same thing you described happens here in most hospitals. You provide payment or guarantee of payment before any service of the sort described is provided. People sign up for these service providers that are able to director connect them to the hospital's pay system. It is the same everywhere. Why hasn't that service been implemented in the Nigerian situation? Because the people do not provide themselves a government that enables businesses to hatch and thrive. What that means is that the responsibility rests on the individuals still to ensure they have access to funds even in emergencies. You do not on the one hand deny yourselves good governance and then on the other hand expect to blame the government for that which you all voted against having. undecided

Did you read what I wrote up there at all? Why not save the life first and you can even double the bill because it was done on credit. I pray you don't loose someone in such situation. You will understand there's nothing compared to life.. you have security in each ward that check if you're owing the hospital before leaving. Why put them there if you're not gonna offer services like this. Even the banking system can actually mess you up with poor network. Like what GT bank did last weekend. From Saturday night till Sunday morning.

1. These people are in business to make money by saving lives. They offer the service and expect to be ahead. undecided

2. Again, they are in business and not your saviours. undecided

3. Losing someone close to me would not change the facts here, which is that these hospitals are not in the business of acting as your saviors but are instead in business to make money by offering you life-saving services. undecided

4. But a more important question we need to ask at this point is where you get this idea that hospitals should not have security of the kind in each of their wards? What mandate or statute do you invoke by this belief of yours? Please, provide details. undecided

5. The reason that particular situation can easily happen to you all has to do with the fact that you continue to allow the most incompetent lunatics to rule over the nation from the grassroots up to the top, essentially stifling meaningful development, which could help mitigate such foolishness. undecided

You wouldn't have asked that question (4) if you understood what I meant. Let's forget about it.

For the record, my mother is a retired matron and I've seen her several times go straight into attending to a patient while instructing the family of what and what to do. Especially in cases of delivery. Nobody ran away with the hospital money. Maybe we have more evil people now than in the old

1. I can't understand what you mean because I have absolutely no clue what your notion is based upon. undecided

2. That depends entirely on the hospital your mother works for. If the business allows her to attend to patients before receiving payment, then she can do that. However, not all businesses believe in operating under such a model, and people have thoroughly explained the disadvantages of such an approach on this thread. Hence, the reason why other business establishments rightly refuse to offer service before payment. undecided

3. Please remove and discard in the trash heap this religious/traditional delusion of good and enough, and try to pay attention. There is no evil in requiring payment up front before service is given. Businesses have that freedom, and they exercise it freely. undecided

The old people freely scammed the hospital systems of the time that did not require payment up front before service. That led to many clinics and hospitals going under, and many of the ones that survived now require upfront payment before service is rendered. Think on that too! undecided

Emergency can happen anytime even with best preparation. Maybe she became unconscious at home and he rushed her to the closest clinic. I pray you are never in these situation to see the horror of healthcare in Nigeria. I lost tree sisters to sickle cell and one died because of negligence and asking family members to be doing the work the clinics should be doing even when you have money to pay. The system needs reform. I even support banning for profit primary healthcare facilities. That way the heartless and greedy ones will leave the professional. Medicines is a noble profession, not for rif rafs and chalatans. If the clinic had treated her and did a go fund me, they will recoup 100X what she owned. That $350, even me as a stranger would have paid it on her behalf. Not everyone places money over human life thankfully.
Gofundme?

I don't think you're in Nigeria
