When I was a kid, I used to find it a lot, but now I haven't seen it for maybe more than 20 years. Is it extinct in all of Nigeria or just in my city?

It's still very much available. I think it's more available during the farming season. I saw them last year but can't remember the exact period-either the beginning of farming (raining season or ending).

Very great observation. I personally saw this as far back 2004. Since then never seen them again

Light pollution.
Some scientific papers attributed distruption in its mating process.
Fireflies use their bioilluminious characteristic to find mate at night. But due to lightings and urbanization by human, they don't get the chance to see a mate. Hence, no mate- no fertilization - no offspring

I questioned this year's back. A lot has changed. I believe they are in abundance somewhere in remote areas where chemicals are less utilized on farm lands. But in the urban areas, it would be rare even when the rain abound.

Plant a garden or flowers, they will come. It doesn’t have to be big.

I have beautiful butterflies and birds visit my garden all the time.

I even had silk worms at a time but they were so destructive I had to get rid of them.

Wao village things. How many like this I have killed when I was growing up in other to extract the so called "lamp" attached to that abdomen? Ignorance eh? I guess those who still farm in the villages will still see some, but urbanisation has driven most of them away. @nlfpm

I believe you can still find in remote areas in Lagos. I saw one in my compound last year . I have a small garden in my compound

That's my childhood led-light - collect some in a glass bottle and watch as your room glow like a discotheque at night!

Forget farming season... when I was at ikorodu those days ikorodu was still Forest this thing shows up every night every where, they light up your room....

Effect of urbanization..... nature would go away

Environmental pollution. Same thing with lizards. I no longer see those.

Now you reminded me, I've not seen them in ages. Maybe it's because I live in a city. I'd ask village people if they're still there. I think they're called fireflies.
