Growing up I feared this insect. Due to the light it displays, I thought it had the same effect as electric ant.
I hardly see it nowadays.

When I was a kid, I used to find it a lot, but now I haven't seen it for maybe more than 20 years. Is it extinct in all of Nigeria or just in my city?

We no longer plant flowers around our homes. These days, people build apartments with full concrete outdoor slabs and call them 'luxury'.

They are still around and are thriving. If you go to places where their habitat has not been tampered, you’ll see them.

They reside in areas where there are plants whether weed or what have you.

For a place like Lagos where infrastructural development is gaining absolute ground, it sends the insects to the habitat that is ideal for them.

Climate change is real. From the millennium y2k Era these things started disappearing. I recall seeing them in the village right after I stopped seeing them in the city of Lagos.
Now, even in dense forests, you'd barely see 'em

Environmental pollution. Same thing with lizards. I no longer see those.
You must live in a very city centre. When I was at Magodo I, there was an elderly lizard that came to spend the night just outside my bedroom window. Because of his calm nature, I named him Nathaniel. Every night, just before I lie down to sleep, I'd peep out and see him there. Then one night, he wasn't there. I guess he went to join his ancestors. He was old.

It's you who had stayed in the city center for too long.... From my understanding I think Insects don't go extinct but evolve and adapt to the environment.... These ones are still very much around in the thick forest and less urban areas.

The use of pesticides and herbicides is killing them. But check out at night. Luminous fire fly.
Combines Luciferine to ignite fire.

They're called fireflies.

Reminds me of the track FIREFLIES by Owl City. No, they've not been completely destroyed.

Their natural habitat is gradually being destroyed by mankind.

Remind me again of that Being called "Light Bringer" Spiritually sensitive Gradmas and Grandpas used to hate seeing this enter the House. Just as Mermaids are products of Fallen Angels' Nephilims that slept with Big Fishes, Fireflies, Luminicence Jelly Fishes, etc. are products of Luciferace Genetic Contamination/Engineering of Bio Lives during Noah's Era before the Flood, I guess some survived by perching on the Ark. There is reason why Owl City(self-deceitfuls Souls would say his Name means nothing) sang "10 Million Fireflies, they leave Tear drops everywhere... I'll rather stay awake while I'm asleep..."

It's still very much around. I still see them at night where I stay mostly during the rainy season. Civilization and urban development and expansion have driven this part of the ecosystem away.

No doubt the insect was genetically engineered, notice how quickly it dies if you try to cage it for closer examination, also if you bring it closer to your eyes headache suddenly kicks in...
