The footballer Eric abidal had liver cancer. Because they caught it localized to one liver lobe, na to remove the lobe and then do follow up chemo. He lives today

A friend of my parents, by the time they found her liver cancer, it had spread outside the liver to bones etc. She opted not to treat it because she knew it was not worth it.

The best you can do is send them home and keep them comfortable. Make sure ideally they are supervised by their family doctor, a palliative care doctor , a nurse and that is it.

There is no improvement of quality of life for stage 4. Admitting them to hospital will be waste of time.

Guy you are absolutely right my experiences in LUTH on two different occasions when I accompanied close relatives to that hospital made me realised once a patient walks into LUTH he or she becomes a practical specimen for teaching medical students empathy is not in their dictionary.
So if you have the means take your relative to anywhere he or she will receive urgent attention.

I had to tell a man some years ago that he had cancer. Our tests and scan had shown it. Terminal cancer. He did not have long to live. He happily accepted the news and thanked me. After he left it took me five minutes to regain my composure for the next patient.


Until he gives us more details about his mother's condition, stop being abusive to health workers.

Bros I'm not abusive, kindly reread my previous post. I'm speaking from experience and not from sentiments. My mum fell ill, I took her to a private hospital and was told she had blood shortage. She needs to do a blood transfusion and they referred us to LUTH. Getting to LUTH the drama started unfolding, first my mum was misdiagnosed as having diabetes and was pumped full with insulin for three whole days. Then another doctor came , prescribed more test, MRI, X-ray and even a bone marrow test. Still they couldn't detect what was actually wrong with her, meanwhile still pumping her full of drugs. Then she was abandoned in the ward for 7 whole days, no doctor came to check on her. On the eight day, I had to go and ambushed the CMD as soon as he was stepping out of his car. He was the one that had to follow me, on the way he called more doctors to accompany him and that was how they remembered they abandoned a patient in their ward. My brother I saw hell there, is the number of people that are wheeled out with gurney to the mortuary on a daily basis. I saw several patients walk in to be admitted and left through the gurney to the mortuary. I almost spent all my life savings, for an imaginary sickness and thank God for my uncles who pitched in. I'm grateful to God for sparing her life, see I'm still hurt from that experience not that I hate doctors or medical practitioners. I even have relatives who are doctors, but sorry to say some doctors are supposed to be admitted in the psychiatric ward and not attending to patients. Thank you

Understand your pain.
But the reason why there seems to be a high casualty rate in places like Luth is because many cases brought in there are either terminal or bad from other facilities that couldn't handle them.That is not however,excusing some avoidable deaths there.
The fact is there are cases even in the advanced countries that medical science can't solve.
But there is no excuse in any book or anywhere in the world where a patient in a teaching Hospital would not be seen by a doctor for a good seven days!That one is criminal negligence.

I just watched this video and me being someone that knows about medical practice and LUTH.My contribution are :
1.There are a lot of gaps in his report.This is story is not complete if we don't know the stage of cancer with the hospital that referred her to LUTH most have stated.if it's an end stage ,it's no longer am emergency even if it will seem like one in the eyes of a non medical.(death is inevitable at this point)
2.The location captured in the short video is LUTH triage entry point..for those of you who don't know what triage is ,it's that point in the hospital where patients are selected in term of degree of severity of their condition and likelihood of survival.my point is if his mother in late stage cancer.the triage doctors will not likely take her in first ,when there is Population out there that immediate intervention will safe thier life..they will take this people in first.
Now ppl may see this as unfair but you need to actually be in LUTH and see how few doctors overwhelmed with loads of patients hence the triage system appears unbalanced but it very needed to safe those that can be saved and avoid wasting the few resources of those we can not.
3.To Nigerians and doctors, it's still an uncommon practice to tell someone with certain end stage cancer the hard truth ,that their is no cure.that is why you see this kind of videos.in developed countries this kind of people would have being properly counselled and told about the prognosis of the disease hence avoiding all the drama.
All in all the health system has been crippled by bad governance but let's continue support the doctors are brave enough to stay bad and help the system.

In this age and time, we shouldn't think like this. Only advance stages offer slim chances of survival. Cancer, especially when discovered early, can be managed and treated completely.
