A 100-level student of University of Ilesa, Osun State, Gbolahan Ojolo, has reportedly died of electrocution triggered by lightning strike in his hall of residence in Ilesa.

Ojolo, a student in the Department of Business Administration, was said to be charging his phone and playing a game on it at the same time when thunder struck.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Registrar of the University, Funso Ojo, said the incident happened on Friday.

Ojo’s statement partly read, “The Management of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, deeply regrets to announce the tragic and untimely death of one of its students, Gbolahan Ojolo, a 100 Level student of the Department of Business Administration.

“The unfortunate incident occurred in the evening of Friday, April 18, 2025. Gbolahan was electrocuted while playing a game on his mobile phone, which was being charged in his room at a private hostel located near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute junction. The electrocution was reportedly triggered by a lightning strike during a thunderstorm.”

Commenting further, the Registrar said the management had informed the police, and after due clearance had been obtained, the remains of the deceased were taken to the morgue of the Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa.

The statement further read, “The police have since commenced a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The University of Ilesa has also made necessary arrangements to support the family during this moment of intense grief and will continue to stand by them through this difficult time.

“The entire University community mourns this painful loss and prays for the repose of Gbolahan’s soul. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, classmates, and the Department of Business Administration.”

Is 220 volts running through domestic sockets that dangerous to electrocute a full conscious person not immersed in water?

The electrocution was reportedly triggered by a lightning strike during a thunderstorm.
She was killed by lightning storm run through the conductor and not the charger or whatever because the metal door or window will still transfer the ultra high voltage.

Unfortunately, autopsy in Nigeria is rocket science. It's possible to electrocute someone through the socket but that's rare. There are earth links in the sockets so how come? Well, in Nigeria anything can happen

Lightening is very deadly, it has happened to me before. It was God that saved me. The phone that I used to hotspot my laptop was totally condemned but I was able to repair the laptop.

Lightening carries a lot of charges, I believe that building is not properly earthed or there is no thunder arrestor at all, so all the changes from the lightening strike emptied into the student's body.

Well, they said he was playing a game, not making a call. In this country where there's hardly any electricity to charge the phone, one can't really be blamed for using it while being charged in the few hours of the day that power is available.

In matters like this the manufacturer of that brand of phone can be sued in other countries but here we just blame the victim (e.g. a car brakes fail, we automatically assume the driver was overspeeding.)

When its raining especially rain accompanied by lightning strikes just unplug your devices or use power bank because if lightning hits your roof or somewhere close to where you're plugged in without extension plug then you can be electrocuted while holding a device thats plugged in..

Poor electrical grounding work on the building probably no thunder arrester installed
Even though it is wrong to use the phone while charging it, the building was surely poorly protected from lightning.
Such as sad event, God console the family of the deceased
