occfx:Possible the hostel is not peoplerly built. It might not be earthed ie grounded. Most houses I hear these days do not have grounding or arresting rods to protect the buildings from lighting strikes. As you said, this is Nigeria, anything happens. Check my post of how bullet came through my roof and pierced my sleeping childs bed narrowing missing her. This mods did not consider it worthy of being moved to front page, in short it is a normal occurrence not worth mentioning. |

MadamExcellency:You definitely don’t know what you’re talking about. Google is your friend you know? Do you know why buildings are mandated to have lightning conductors especially in Europe and US? We rarely have such here in Africa because of ignorance and negligence. It doesn’t matter if there’s light when lightning strikes but if there isn’t a conductor to absorb it, any electrical appliances becomes a conductor and if you’re unlucky to touch it, you’ll suffer mild to serious electrocution. It happened to me once when I was working on my laptop while there was no light and it was raining. My pregnant wife was sleeping with her head on my back when lightning struck, it wasn’t funny at all. Nah God save us that day |

DMCY:How will flight mode save you? Lighting runs through anything that conductor electricity or charges. If that building has no Lighting arrestor, the Lighting will rin through the conductors within that building . |

I guess God really saved me that year for Nsukka when lighting struck my room and I had Nokia Symbian phone in my hand.....and the lighting slapped it out of my hand... The night prior to that Sunday morning(Saturday night)I was washing the dishes right in front of my room whilst it was raining using the rain water... 5 minutes later, a lighting struck the spot where I was doing the washing. When I posted it on my fb... my corper friend saw the post n commented na because u no go church |

Celestialsword:To a large extent this is true, but as long as u have conductors around the building, even if you switch off the power source, extreme voltage can still run through the house during thunderstorm and lightning, That's why it's best to have thunder arrestors on top of buildings that'll absorb it straight into the earth. Thunder arrestors are quite expensive that's why lots of buildings don't have them. Also, buildings should have good earthing system. . And I am talking from experience. |

Love800:No its not safe. Lightning strike has spoilt my fan while it was plugged to an extension. The plug where the fan was plugged to in the extension also burnt but other plugs in the extension still work and it was also connected to a wall guard. |

daylae:It means one should stay away from conductors at home when it rains heavily like( metal door knob, iron protectors, pots, spoons aluminium plates and cups) I am also thinking that his phone doesn't have a pouch. Phone pouch apart from adding beauty to the phone also serves as insulator |

NinjaMetahuman:It's the lightening that discharges electric current (electricity)through a CONDUCTOR e.g metal, humans, earth. The flow of electrons in a conductor is known as ELECTRIC CURRENT while the force required to make that current flow through the conductor is known as VOLTAGE. |
| Re: Osun Student Electrocuted With Plugged Phone by Urgent1Million: 7:41pm On Apr 20, 2025 |
Lifestone:Lightning carries up to 30,000 Amps of current. When there is a strike, it discharges into power lines and causes a surge. Remember that power lines are not insulated (naked wires). The surge flows through the wirings In a house and onto any appliance that is connected at that time. A typical phone charger carries 3 - 5 amps of current which is enough to cause cardiac arrest and stop the heart from beating. It is safest to unplug all appliances during a thunderstorm. Several warnings have been put out there but people still refuse to listen. It's unfortunate the guy died that way. May his soul rest in peace. |
