China is not obligated to open a production line in Nigeria. We have over 100 billionaires in Nigeria who can buy technology, engineering, resources and training. An enabling environment you create for investors to come in, such one that will guarantee them of profit.

My stance has been that, China is cheating anyone and only exploiting the foolishness of others which is acceptable in trade. The US and Europe did same to us when China was nothing. We bought everything there.

Remember, Tesla and Apple are not operating in the US despite the huge tax cuts they get. Amazon imports massively from China. You know why? Because labour is expensive in the US.

If Nigeria can get 200 million people to activity, do you even think Nigeria will be a favorable market for China to export to.

It’s our own lapses, not anyone’s fault. We still importing pencils, eraser and sharpeners. It’s not that we don’t have perps who can, but the country is not enabling.

The easiest which is farming is even risky, do we blame other countries for also flooding our market with consumables.
I can see you have your head in the sand. I even doubt U are truly Nigerian.

Without transfer of technology and skills,, no country can be competitive in manufacturing.

The west helped china to develop. China should help other smaller nations too.
Bye.

True @bold
But I'm sure China will lose more in the long run. Over $500 billion export market is no joke.

Peter obi once told us that the way out is by moving from consumption to production. If china have to close the gap created by the resent unhealthy trade relationship between them and the US and they turn there major attention towards Nigeria,. It means that soon Nigeria might start importing pure water from china ( it can be that bad because our trade with china is one sided)

Yes u re correct,I sell goods imported from US and even if it's made by China the quality is far higher than the ones entering Nigeria via China

You guys know nothing about the Chinese government, they don't keep to agreement they signed, all agreement signed under President Trump's first term in office, about 90 pages the Chinese never fulfill any of the agreement. If a whole American and the Europeans are unable to make the Chinese keep to their own side of agreement is it corrupt Nigerian officials that will be able to make the Chinese fulfill it's own side of trade agreement with Nigeria.

You’ve made a very important point, and I honestly think more people should be paying attention to this. We’ve talked so much about the US-China trade war, but the real opportunity for us Nigeria and Africa is right here with China looking our way.

Now, $51 billion in investments, aid, and loans? That’s no small amount. If China is serious about diversifying away from the US and they're looking at Africa especially Nigeria as their next big market, we need to come to the table with our heads held high and a plan that benefits us.

With the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCTA) now in place, this is the best time for African countries to build cross-border industries. It means we can move past just exporting raw materials and start creating value here on the continent. That’s where the real growth and jobs will come from.

You also mentioned how Chinese contractors accounted for about 60% of construction work in Africa in 2019. That’s massive! But let’s not just celebrate that. Let’s use it as a sign that China is deeply invested here. So we shouldn’t be begging. We should be negotiating.

US is playing checkers while China has been playing chess. The US economy will tank once they run out of Chinese goods. Their infrastructure is already in crisis. I almost feel like Trump is working for Putin.

For Nigeria it’s not enough for us to import we need to encourage them to come and set up factories and apprenticeships here for tech products and AI. So we can be the powerhouse.

All China needs todo is set up the factories of the most lucrative products they sell to US in Nigeria since we don’t have any ban with US.

But our leaders are still rolling on the floor for Europeans while selling us out for peanuts

Greedy Chinese always looking for the next economy to destroy with their cheap products. Our government should not let these guys flood our market with goods that our people already manufacture in sufficient volumes.

If you know what Chinese cheap goods have done to American manufacturing industries, you will not criticize Trump for taking drastic steps against China. sad
Most people don't know about it, they think Trump is the bad bag, not knowing he's trying to save his country from over dependence on Chinese products.

This is risky fa.

We already import more goods from China than from any other country in the world. We import about 9 to 10 times the value of what we export to China. Our trade relationship is lopsided. Which is the exact situation that has exacerbated the recent US-China trade war in the first place, trade deficit—US importing more than it exports to China. With the US market freezing for China and the increased attention Nigeria will continue to receive from China, our own trade deficit with them is likely to grow exponentially now. Their goal would be to close the $500B gap the American market has created, and to do so they'll try to max out their trade with all other partners. Maybe they'll aim to double the $20B they've with us in the next few years, we being a country of 200M people. More industries and businesses that previously had the US as their main market will turn look for alternatives.

Our local industries in the same market are unlikely to be able to compete favorably with their Chinese counterparts due to higher manufacturing costs here. What will happen is that the markets will become even more saturated with Chinese products, outpacing local competition and eventually pushing them out. With that, we return to the age of importing everything from China — including toothpicks and pencils (if we’re not still there already). Factories shut down, people lose jobs, unemployment spikes, followed by all the economic implications that come with it.

Will our government protect us like the US is trying to protect local production? Unlikely. China will offer more loans, which creates more resources for our theifing leadership to steal, so nobody will complain.
Everyone seem to be commenting out of point except you.

Why are Nigerians rejoicing with such news? Is it because they hate USA? More like cutting of the nose to spite the face.

Nigeria cannot afford extra imports and trade imbalance if we must develop.

This news is a VERY bad news for Nigerian growth and existence.

China will use her socalled private investors to buy large shares in foreign manufacturing companies. Then they use same investors to cunningly buy majority of the shares or better still run the company to the ground. All to reduce competition for their companies in China
So Nigeria lost her textile industry because it can be produced very cheap in China

Nigeria is not China's biggest market in Africa; South Africa is substantially larger!
Yes, you are correct.

But note that Nigeria is China's biggest consumer in Africa by trade volumes.

South Africa is largest by the reason of trade value. Which is due to Naira devaluation (almost by 300%).

So, the weight of transactions China will get from Nigeria is wider.

The Chinese patronage has hurt our economy more than the European patronage.

As hurtful as our trade with Europeans and the USA are, the there’s still little conscience in it. But that if China, it’s totally one sided.

And so, we don’t need them setting up any small factory here. The ones they did, there’s no local content except buying our raw materials for a token. Our people are doing only menial jobs like gateman and security In those factories.

It’s even very painful because these factories are not even Hiteck production. An average uneducated semi skilled Nigerian can manage them perfectly. Problem is funds for startups and enabling environment which for some reasons the government for the past 20 years have refused to provide.

Are you joking? Europe has kept our country in bondage for centuries. They refused to help with infrastructure, they only want to pillage our country to enrich themselves. Anytime we ask for assistance they shout human rights. Human rights doesn’t stop them from the brain drain of all our medical staff.

Europe, especially France and US (don’t forget they just admitted to this) funds the insecurity that is plaguing Nigeria affecting stability for growth.

The reason this govt is not providing an enabling environment is because they are kissing up to western governments who don’t want us to grow. This is why Abacha was successful he ignored them and built up our economy.

Chinese are not angels but at least we have goods and infrastructure that is relatively modern. Their communist mindset can work for us if our leaders use their heads to negotiate instead of selling us out to the west.

This argument should come from a Chinese citizen. If you are not I cannot see what benefit you gain from losing control of your economic destiny to another nation.

I can admire China for all the strides they have made and blame this country for not becoming like them but when I tell you that China is undermining the economies of a good number of countries then you better believe it.

And for a country like Nigeria (where I live) that is grapling with austerity and a failing extractive industry based economy the signs are not good.

If larger economies with huge indigenous industries around the world have been gutted where is Nigeria going to find jobs for the millions of her citizens going forward.

I repeat again. AS AN EXAMPLE. America or Europe had never made textiles indigenous to Africa to export to Africa but China is doing that, why?
Don’t mind the guy.

Most Nigerians will be first to shout one Nigeria. They also are first to accuse other people as haters of Nigeria. But in deeds, their hatred for Nigeria has no bounds.

We are talking about how the China/nigeria trade imbalance is hurting our economy and some people are here rejoicing that China is about to increase their exports to Nigeria.

What an irredeemable humans we have here.

The country is so bad but oyibo and Chinese are in every nook and cranny of Nigeria making money. Has it not occurred to you that Nigerians can and should be the ones taking advantage of our own resources?

Smh. USA is not even among the top 3 of our best trading partners. You are using obsolete information. China has over the years been reducing its trade with US in preparation for a moment like this.

USA itself has over the years shifted from being a manufacturing power house to becoming a service oriented economy so much that it's leading manufacturing companies have shifted their factories to China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Most Americans buy mostly made in China products!

Smh. If it's by US dollars then ask yourself why on earth did Tesla, Apple etc moved to those countries. Ignorance is not bliss o. Here's what Late President Reagan predicted when he resisted what Trump is currently doing https://youtube.com/shorts/tXb5P2hsVHI?si=LTZAq-EAs6Mq_sGp

In your estimation, Reagan, a Republican President, too is hyping China. Smh
Coz of cheap labour I know, as for Tesla most of it part are made in America. And on trade USA buy more from us than china,
It easy to get debt relief from USA than from china. It easy for them to come to Ur aid during crisis than china. Let us not sell ourselves short.
It easy for a USA major companies to come here and set up shop than china.

The statement that the US economy is over 7 trillion USD bigger than China's is inaccurate.
The US economy is estimated to be around 30 trillion USD, while China's is around 20 trillion USD.
This puts the difference at roughly 10 trillion USD, not 7 trillion USD
