Former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has declared that no politician can win the Nigerian presidency in 2027 without the support of the northern region.


Speaking in a video interview obtained by Daily Trust in Kaduna, Baba-Ahmed, who appeared alongside Professor Usman Yusuf, former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), emphasized that the North would soon define its political direction.
“In the next six months, the North will decide where it stands. If the rest of the country wants to join us, fine. If not, we will go our own way. One thing is clear: nobody can become president of Nigeria without northern support,” he asserted.

He lamented the state of the nation and urged northerners to resist divisive and deceptive politicians ahead of the next general elections.


“We want a government that understands our problems and can address them. After Buhari’s eight years, we became wiser. Now, we are in another government, and we are still crying. Is crying all we know how to do?” Baba-Ahmed asked.


Reflecting on past experiences, he said the North had suffered greatly during the Boko Haram insurgency, which affected all groups Muslims, Christians, Fulani, Baju, and others highlighting the need for unity.

“Before Buhari became president, Boko Haram was bombing mosques, churches, Abuja, and Lagos. That was a time northerners had to unite. Today, no politician can just show up and expect northerners to fall in line. Who are you?” he questioned.

He warned against further marginalization of the North, noting that continued disregard for the region would have consequences.


“If they plan to rig the election, they should be careful. It won’t be good for Nigeria. The North is watching. Elders, masses, and interest groups will soon say ‘enough is enough.’ The injustice and sidelining must stop,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed also urged the region to look beyond identity politics, stressing that competence and integrity should guide voter decisions.

“We are tired of being deceived into voting based on religion or ethnicity. That era is over. We just want a right leader let him falls from heaven, we just want someone who will solve our problems,” he said.

He concluded by asserting that the northern electorate had learned hard lessons from past choices and would approach 2027 with a new mindset.

No one can become Nigeria's president without an intimate bromance between the north and the south.

Tinubu won at least one state in each geopolitical zone, except south east.

Atiku got at least 25% in 22 states, despite winning majority of the states in the north west but losing the majority of the votes. He also won only the north east geopolitical zone. His albatross was in the south, and Tinubu outcompeting him in the north. As argued that no one can become Nigeria's president without the north, Atiku's poor performance in the south is also an indication that no one can become Nigeria's president without the south.

Obi got at least 25% in 16 states, despite winning most of the zones in the south, e.g., sweeping the entire south east and nicking the states in the south south and beating Tinubu in Lagos. However, his poor performance in the north is an indication that you'd need the north to come to the party to give you the seat.

Tinubu got at least 25% in 29 states, winning the south west, north central and north west. Despite Atiku carry more north west states, Tinubu was competitive and the states where he beat Atiku like Jigawa and Zamfara, the beating was comprehensive. This is an indication that you need both north and south to come together to decide the fate of the country.

This is a reflection of one good attribute of Jagaban. He is a bold leader who doesn't care about whose ox is gored.

One would have expected him to chicken out because of Second Term ambition and allow some people with entitlement mentality dictate to him.

A region once had all the three organs of government headed by it at the same time.
Taking the back seat for just less than two years out of power now becomes a serious issue.

Even if this decision to redistribute power would be at the expense of his second term, he is going to be remembered for his boldness to call some people's bluffs.

…….just as no candidate can win without the South. Both regions are indispensable—not just for their electoral weight, but for the legitimacy and unity a truly national mandate requires. Even former President Buhari, despite his immense popularity in the North, contested multiple times and failed to win the presidency until he expanded his appeal beyond the North and built alliances across the South. His eventual victory came when he presented a more inclusive, pan-Nigerian message. That alone underscores the political reality: success at the national level demands unity, strategic coalition-building, and a message that resonates across all regions.
