Stress? Who told you that stress will help you achieve a first-class? First-class is mainly for people with exceptional academic talent. Let’s be honest, no matter how hard most people study or stress, they won’t earn it. It is 70% talent/gift + 30% hardwork.

I’m currently studying for my first degree in Statistics. I can graduate with a 2.1 effortlessly, but getting a first-class would require a bit effort. My issue is that I’m already balancing a job, plus I’m feeling lazy and unmotivated about school.

For those who have graduated and have experience about the labour market, please:

Are there any significant advantages to having a first-class over a 2.1?
Did it make a difference in your career, further studies, or job opportunities?

I need real-life experiences and opinions to convince me whether to put in the effort or just avoid unnecessary stress.
My simple and direct advice to you is to focus on the school first. You might not have a 2nd chance at first degree again after this. What is worth doing at all, is worth doing well. Except if the job pays your school fee, else, get your 1/2:1 first, there will be time for jobs, even you sef go dey pick and choose.

No. Be first class in how to habdle life not only school. I have seen many book smart people but they end up just being book smart alone.

It all depends on what your focus is.

If your focus in life is geared towards working for people or pursuing an academically inclined career, then a first class is worth the effort.

But if your focus in life is business-oriented, building a business empire—then, for me, a first class is just a piece of paper.

You better aim for a first class..if you aim for 2:1 anything can happen and you may fall below. This same feeling you have many of us thought like you too when we were in school. Please brace up

It depends

If you’re doing something that has prospects for instance a business/startup/learning a skill that’s doing well and getting a first class might kill ur business then try and get may be a 4.xx/5 or a 2:1. If education is all ur doing and banking on (which I’m not a fan of ) then try for a first class

All in all life is so unpredictable and unscripted do your best

I think it's worth the stress. It opens certain doors.. Offcourse it also depends on First class in what discipline.

However even if u don't have it there are other things that can open important doors for u.

My only advice is: If you can get first class, by all means try to get it.

Any first class graduate that is complaining of unemployment is not serious, under-employed? Maybe, but unemployed? Nah

It's over rated in Nigeria, especially don't try to have first class in Botany or Philosophy, you will end becoming an assistant lecturer with 200k monthly salary.

Brother, learn some skills while you are in the uni and start making money... especially if you are planning to stay in Nigeria.
You can have First Class in anything!

First class and second class always ends up working for third class or drop out.if you want to be wealthy, forget it, it will make you sell your time to people who are not even second class.
Re: Is First Class Worth The Stress Or Overrated? Need Your Opinions And Experience by Johnson5258: 12:03pm On Apr 22, 2025
Make you get the 1st class if you can ooooooo.
Some schools abroad will take you immediately for PhD.

It pays more to have it.

It depends on what you want in life. First class gives you opportunities to get a scholarship in prestigious universities in the world for further studies.

The question you need to answer is why limit yourself when you can be much more than there is to be?

Overall, second class upper and first class have a lot of similar opportunities. The only distinct difference is the academic opportunities if you intend to further academically.

graduate with the best result that you can possibly get and forget all those clowns telling you that school na scam. With a good result, you're one phone call from breakthrough but with a bad result, the hustle is ten times harder

Definitely worth it. What is more is your creativity, doggedness and perseverance while searching for PhD scholarships. They don't come easy just because you had a first class. But they do come if you persevere.
