The Presidency on Tuesday evening rose in strong defence of the Federal Executive Council’s approval of a N10 billion solar energy project for the State House, amid public outcry over the cost and timing of the initiative.

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, made the clarification on his verified X handle, following media reports questioning the necessity of the project, especially in view of Nigeria’s current economic realities.

Onanuga stressed that transitioning the State House to solar power aligns with global best practices, noting that the White House in Washington, D.C., also uses solar energy as part of its power supply.

“The White House in Washington D.C. uses solar power,” Onanuga wrote, implying that the adoption of renewable energy for high-level government facilities is not unprecedented and reflects a commitment to sustainability.

The Special Adviser illustrated his point with video of a similar project executed for the American number one residence, which explains the reasons the US Presidency opted for the solar alternative.

The proposed solar system, sources said, would provide stable electricity for the President’s residence, administrative offices, and other essential buildings within the State House complex, enhancing energy efficiency and long-term cost savings.

While some Nigerians have hailed the environmental benefits of the initiative, others have raised concerns about its price tag and whether such expenditure is prudent at a time when many citizens are grappling with economic hardship.

So whatever white house in USA does is the standard but you guys removed fuel and power subsidy while maintaining religious subsidy. You guys allow bandits kill entire villages, is that American standard to you? Or allowing thieves write residents one month before a major robbery and still rob successfully? They have form a banditry response unit but never need response units to tame 20m protesters across all 36 states.

This is the highest irresponsibility of the Nigeria government! They tend to use the White House as an excuse for their failure! So why not compare the electricity supply in the US to ours ? They have 24/7 supply of electricity in the US but of course Bayo Onanuga would never compare. But when it comes to stealing of public funds to finance their failure, they are always so quick to compare with the White House. These politicians are the worst enemies of the Nigerian people and you all will riot in hell for this atrocities against humanity. It’s really absurd and disgusting 🤮

You don't have any sensible counter point other than the usual foaming in the mouth. Are you aware that the 36 State Governors recently signed an MoU with a Chinese company to provide renewable energy for power generation in their states?. That's the beauty of the electricity law.

And why are some people crying?, Is ignorance your problems or something?. Do you think State House only belongs to the President?. A State House is a very big complex that houses lots of offices and departments of Government. In a State House we have the Office of the President, Office of the Vice President, Office of the Secretary to the Government of Federation, Office of the Chief of Staff, Office of the Head of Civil Service, Office of the National Security Adviser, State House of Administration, Press office, State House Conference Center, State House Annexe.
And each of this office has its own offices of Directors and Heads of Departments. They operate just like a ministry does but at the very highest of Administration. Likewise, the State House is host to hundreds, if not thousands of workers.
This big place consumes lots of Kw of power running into billions, the best alternative is to diversify to renewable energy for cost effective and productivity. This is the beauty of the new electricity law which has afforded every institution at each level of government to generate its own electricity. In a renewed efforts whereby the Government is championing the course of increasing electricity capacity and generation.
Anyone crying foul of the FG using a renewable energy to generate power must be stuck in the dark age and of primitive mindset. And if the cost is too high in your view, then how much high is too high for a very big multilayer work complex as a State House?.

The US generates electricity through Nuclear, Coal, natural gas , Wind, Hydro , Solar , Biomass & the likes. Must Nigeria then get stuck to only Hydro and gas?. What's wrong in using solar?
