Three states – Rivers, Benue, and Akwa Ibom – top the chart in the latest HIV spectrum estimates obtained from the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, News360 Nigeria reports.,

Over two million people are reported to be currently living with HIV across Nigeria.

The report stated that the 2024 HIV prevalence by states showed that Rivers has the highest number of people living with HIV, with 208,767 recorded cases.

Benue followed closely with 202,346 cases, while Akwa Ibom has 161,597 recorded cases.

Meanwhile, Lagos State reported 108,649, recorded cases placing it fourth nationwide.

Anambra State has 100,429 cases, while the FCT reported 83,333 cases.

Other states in the high-prevalence bracket include Delta (68,170), Imo (67,944), Enugu (61,028), Edo (60,095), and Taraba (58,460).

The middle tier includes states with reported cases, such as Abia (54,655), Kaduna (54,458), and Kano (53,972).

Plateau State also reported a significant number, with 51,736 people living with HIV, followed closely by Borno (50,433) and Oyo (50,063). Cross River (43,452), Ogun (43,348), and Nasarawa (44,993) make up the mid-range prevalence group.

Adamawa reported 40,059 cases, while states like Gombe (31,825), Jigawa (31,409), Osun (30,714), and Niger (29,756) follow closely behind.

Bauchi reported 28,698, followed by Kogi (28,421), Ondo (27,150), and Katsina (26,788) fall into the lower-middle category, while Bayelsa State reported 25,339 cases.

States with the lowest numbers of recorded cases include Kwara (20,259), Kebbi (19,339), Ekiti (18,857), Sokoto (15,223), Ebonyi (14,151), Zamfara (13,253), and Yobe (11,956).

People hardly go for voluntery testing and densely populated places like Lagos and Kano states could have more than what is reported.

Why will anyone believe these figures are accurate when the figures from census etc are still contested till today? What makes these figures, all of sudden, authentic when it is coming from a FG agency?

Everyone should just use protection, even if you are engaging with a virgin (e get reason) or your state is last on the list. For long term relationship or marriage, test b4 u go bare with your full chest.

Since 2016, Rivers State, Benue State, and Akwa Ibom have consistently ranked as the three states with the highest HIV populations. embarassed

Good news, we have better meds. The meds we use now work perfectly in keeping viral load down.

We also.have a newer med that can be given once every three months...that is four times a year. No need to take tablets. Problem is it is expensive. Right now, negotiations on price are deadlocked with the maker offering a price that is three times higher than what the south Africans and NGOs want. Either way the maker loses money

And we have an idea of how a cure would work. Two people have been cured ..but such a cure would require millions of dollars and is risky.

Lagos not topping that chart should be frightening. They should encourage people there to go for tests.
It's even risky for those living in Lagos because you feel you are safe not knowing HIV is being freely shared.

The above statistic means that HIV rate in Nigeria is less than 1% and is no longer a Generalized HIV Epidemic (GHE), which is actually good news.

2 million out of a population of over 220m is less than 1% so that's a very low figure statistically, but we must work to eradicate or reduce HIV to the lowest possible...
