You see your last line? That last question you asked but didn't answer? My birds are older as you stated but their egg sizes are small. I'm suspecting it's the heat but I've never had birds that produce eggs with fluctuating sizes like the set I have now.

it's this heat. I'm also a poultry farmer
Make sure their room is well ventilated
The most common mistakes egg production poultry farmers make is construction of the bird house
Building poultry house for layers is quite different from broilers own
The design is different

Just make sure their room is well ventilated
Then don't joke with water
Make sure their drinking water never ceases. If possible place ice block inside their water
It helps a lot

I know a family selling eggs from their local birds at the current market rate. They don't buy feeds or anything. These chicken roam about in the house for food. We even sometimes donate waste food to them.

The inflation in Nigeria is partly artificial.

If they sell their eggs cheap when they go to the market to buy food stuff to feed themselves will they buy it cheap, What about fuel, perhaps they will buy it for free?

Yes heat stress can affect the sizes of your eggs. Sometimes your eggs may look small, but are actually large.

In fact we couldn’t meet their demand as at that time.

How many chickens are we talking about? Pasture-raised eggs are great in small settings, but at a commercial scale, they’re not currently feasible in Nigeria. Sure, having one or two birds roaming the backyard or village and laying eggs is fine—you can even sell the eggs. But that’s not the same as being a commercial egg producer. Scale and consistency are a whole different game.

Good ! But then when buyer sense desperation ,it might affect the price . Also , logistics cost money and lastly ,if sometimes one find it hard to sell available eggs ,it will demoralised farmers to scale up .

Forcing your birds to lay big eggs as it's impact of birds and it's laying period which might likely not be a good idea when you compare it to the profit you get , just get the medium egg size and a longer laying period

You're spot on. Forcing hens to produce oversized eggs can put unnecessary strain on their reproductive systems, potentially shortening their laying cycle and leading to more health issues like prolapse. We actually keep our chickens laying up to 100 weeks while maintaining 70% production. Our current flock will clock 110 weeks before we sell; production at 65% - still profitable. Currently at 108 weeks.

This is called egg glut, when significantly exceed demand. This happens especially during school holidays and it will lead to drop in price.

Having regular off takers is key, regular and periodic marketing for new customers is also very key

Remember networking, make friends with some other poultry farmers

Perfectly understandable, however, selling at a small margin is better than no sale at all or sales at a loss.

Buyer settles logistics and any associated cost, I manage my small margin 🤝

Interesting, do antibiotics have a direct impact on egg size? Here at Petros Farms, we don't use antibiotics, and we're likely the only commercial layer farm in Nigeria that doesn't. I would not say that is why our eggs are big.

The reason i said the inflation is artificial. Hard for economic policy to fix. Well, we have started doing trade by batter with our leftover waste we supplied to them for free. We get equal value of eggs in return grin

We love them and we wouldn't take money from them.

We have good flock of birds on our own now.
