In Nigeria, the term "next of kin" is widely misunderstood, especially among parents and guardians. Many people mistakenly believe that naming someone as their next of kin automatically grants that person the right to inherit their assets or properties upon their death. This misconception has led to numerous legal and familial disputes, particularly when parents list their underage children as next of kin in official documents, bank accounts, or insurance policies. |

While naming a person as NOK does not automatically grant right of succession, it may act persuasively on the mind of the probate officers when granting a letter of administration in a case where a person dies intestate. |

Obi Cubana was a bit clear on the context in which he used the term "next of kin" I believe it's not everything that should be thrown out there on Social media It's also noteworthy that if a company wants to pay financial benefits to a deceased Person, they will contact the next of kin My advice to some married men, go back to your workplace where you started work before marriage, go back to your financial investments and change your next of kin. To make it easier for the family you brought into this world |

It's like the name you write on a that record while traveling using public transport, Incase something happened to you they'll know who to contact, I always said this but people dey call me over Sabi, next of kin doesn't mean you get to inherit the kingdom once someone is gone. |

Zionmdde:Which context? There can't be another definition. If Obi Cubana gets involved in an accident and someone needs to be called, it should be his wife and not his little kids. |

You're right. I once worked with one of the leading telecommunications companies in Nigeria in their HR Department as a Reward personnel I can tell you I have first hand information and experience how this thing works. I will advice employees should update their records with relevant information as things change or happen in their lives especially those that work with companies that have life insurance policy for their staff members. |

Lanretoye:You are still wrong. No lawyer uses next of kin to share assets. And no judge will make any judgement of property inheritance using next of kin. If someone dies without a will (known as dying intestate), their assets will be distributed according to the laws of their state, which is generally based on the principle of intestate succession |

Very good explanation but please read extensively on "next of kin" It is far more than just 'closest relative in time of emergency' |

jmoore:Your second paragraph tells you the context he used by calling one of his little kids next of kin is not aligning with what OP meant Yes OP might be correct but in financial cases, the person you submitted as next of kin will be contacted and paid |
