Good evening sir. What aspect of engineering did you study?. Engineering is a broad field. Additionally, are you competent in Engineering design and skilled in the utilisation of the engineering tools associated with your profession? If you are, you would not find it difficult getting a job and practicing your profession, speaking from experience of close to two decades practicing structural engineering.
You make me laugh. I will not bother to engage you. As far you're concerned, everyone who studies engineering in Nigeria can have a job in the profession. Unsurprisingly it is in the lands with the least opportunities that the individual is to blame for not having opportunity. The jobs are so abundant here that's why we produce absolutely nothing and all our engineering graduates with the means have gone abroad to make a living.

By the way, I have over 25 years post-graduation "experience" doing jobs below my degree level, and I was even employed by a major company and trained outside Nigeria for those below-par roles. I suppose they just didn't want to fill their vacant engineering roles. Lol

You say mass-com is useless! Do you know that after musicians, mass-com graduates are the next in making crazy money! This is for those that practice it and really know what they doing though!

The best thing is to just forget the degree and focus on other things. That's the reality we find yourselves. Geography is a nice course and it's not that it's useless ooo but Nigeria is the problem.
Why the sarcasm na?
Y?
"...not that it's useless oooo..."

How did you do it?

Actually, i don't understand your whole comment. Can you retype again and clearly make me understand the message you are trying to pass?
gare:
Dont mind people, I studied Educational Psychology, I never stepped into the class to teach, but presently I am a senior manager in an Oil and Gas company, you have opportunity to go for a higher course if you choose, no degree is bad, i know someone that studied Adult education and came out with a 3rd class, but today he has 2 private jets and good business here in Nigeria.

All these courses are great courses, Nigeria is not developed enough to benefit from these courses.

You studied engineering! Why didn't you apply for NNPC!
Dwightventures:
This is because Nigeria is still a jungle of savages. Why you no add engineering? I made sure none of the people after me had any interest in engineering "na me know book pass" syndrome. After years of wasting my life studying engineering, I am now more or less a technician and the complete illiterates who did not even go to any school are the ones Nigerians call "engineer" everywhere. Abi all those phone repairers for computer village, wetin una dey call them?

This country is a mess. My only relief is that though I had no proper guidance growing up, I have guided those after me aright, even if they don't know enough to have gratitude

Why are you jumping around from applied math to statistics and then to GIS?? I understand that those courses have relationships, however, they are not exactly the same thing and that could pose a serious challenge for you in terms of specialty. So where is your specialty now? GIS or applied math or statistics? I hope you are not planning on settling in the academia because you will be seen as a jack of all trade and master of none.
I'm not jumping around

I can settle anywhere I desire too academia or industry or even policy

My specialty are majorly Geostatistics, Spatial Statistics, Geospatial, Spatial Analystics and GeoAI

Just to educate you a little those listed above are combination and integration of Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science and Geography

Applied in Public Health, Crime analysis, Utility management, environmental management, etc..

Does it matter if being jack of all trade pays the bills why not?

Hence proudly

BSc Applied Mathematics, Osun State university
Msc Statistics, University of New Mexico
PhD GIS, Texas State University (in view)

This guy is mean

I know he's being quite straightforward with the gospel truth

but then again, someone should please help remind him that everything is not about money

Knowledge is also necessary

Because knowledge is power

The only area where our Nigerian school system has continued to fail millions upon millions of our graduates is in guiding the students in how to apply the knowledge they might be acquiring and turn it into true power

Once that can be done, you will see that even the person that studied Linguistics or Industrial Mathematics or even Philosophy per se is an automatic hotcake upon graduation

The only course of study that doesn't required skill s in Nigeria is MBBS the rest required additional skills for survival. I hv seeing many engineering graduate work as tellers in the bank.

I’m an area manager
You think they give out positions because they like you abi I started as an ordinary associate which doesn’t need degree and moved to a pa and they area manager which I applied for with my university degree couple with other certifications

You just buttressed my point with the bolden darling😊

Getting a foot into any big organization without a degree is the key.

Something u can't do in Nigeria. Expect u av connections by the way.

Once u are in, all u need is to build relationships and network ur way to the top with additional certifications like u said if possible.

Add Geology and Geophysics to that list. Two difficult courses but no value in Nigeria economy. If ur papa no get leg or CEO for one oil and gas, u go teach geography tire for secondary schools
No be you suppose talk this one. Must everyone that studied geology or geophysics work in oil and gas? Is there no hydro and other fields in Geology? Even in the West, does everybody work in the field of their first degree? The first degree mainly helps you broaden how you reason and that is the fact. In my team at work, we are 10 (6 PhDs, 2 ABDs, and 2 Masters (one has CFA and the other CAMS)). Interestingly, we all are from different fields of life (1 PhD Statistics and CFA, 1 PhD Mathematics and CAMS, 1 PhD Physics, 1 PhD Economics, 1 PhD Neuroscience, 1 PhD Finance and CFA Level 2, 1 ABD Physics, 1 ABD Electrical Engineering, 1 MSc Political Science and CFA, and 1 MSc Statistics and CAMS) and we all are in the financial service.

Similar things in my previous organizations/roles. Most importantly, I think what we should preach is the willingness to improve on one's self at all times.

Can you give a little insight on what you do with this structural engineering?
What are the things you do in the practicing of structural engineering?
I've been practicing structural engineering for close to two decades. My expertise stems from the structural analysis and design of Bridges (First order elastic analysis & second order elastic analys), to the design of offfshore platforms, dynamic analysis of large reciprocating and rotating equipment support structures and foundations, massive billboards (I re-designed that located on 3rd mainland), to the structural design of pipe racks, slope stabilisation structures, etc. I've handled countless structural engineering projects inclusive of finite element and seismic analysis (zone 1-located structures) of buildings in process facilities, lattice masts, etc. There are numerous countless potentials to harness as a civil engineer if you are competent in structural engineering design to the relevant international codes of practice such as EN codes, API codes, DNV, etcetera
I possess extreme fervor in the use of STAAD, SACS, AUTOCAD, etc in executing projects for my clients. I carry out finite element analysis of complex structures including mechanical pressure vessels and large hydrocarbon storage tanks

Good evening sir. If you clearly read my proposition, I posited lucidly that if you are competent and technically grounded in the discipline associated with your specific engineering profession you wouldn't be without a job. I completely stand to be corrected on this. By competent, I imply the ability to carry out engineering designs using the modern tools (computer aided design) associated with your profession which is in demand.
Specifically, I've been practicing structural engineering for close to two decades and currently as a consultant engineer. My expertise, amongst a variety of capabilities includes the structural analysis and design of jetties, quaysides, Bridges (First order elastic analysis & second order elastic analys), to the design of offfshore platforms, dynamic analysis of large reciprocating and rotating equipment support structures and foundations, massive billboards (I re-designed that located on 3rd mainland), to the structural design of pipe racks, slope stabilisation structures, etc. I've handled countless structural engineering projects inclusive of finite element and seismic analysis (zone 1-located structures) of buildings in power plants & process facilities. I possess extreme fervor in the use of STAAD, SACS, AUTOCAD, etc in executing projects for my clients. I carry out finite element analysis of complex structures including mechanical pressure vessels and large storage tanks. Therefore it would be almost impossible for an engineer with the right mindset and a quarter of these abilities to be without a job and unemployed. NEVER!!
