Lagos State Government has said that about 45.7 per cent of the 58,188 students in the state who participated in the 2024 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) passed the examination.

This implies that 54.3 per cent of the students failed, amounting to 31,596 students. Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, who disclosed this, yesterday, during the ongoing media briefing to mark the second year of the second term of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration, however, said that the state government would address the decline in performance of the students WASSCE and other external examinations, and had devised strategies for improvement, seeking innovative solutions.

The commissioner also said that about N1.577 billion was spent to pay for the examination fees of 58,188 students who were captured for the 2024 WASSCE.
“In order to prevent wastage and ensure accountability in sponsorship process, biometric capture and image registration exercise was conducted for all Senior Secondary III students to accurately determine the number eligible for sponsorship by the Lagos State Government for the year 2025 WASSCE. The exercise successfully captured and registered 56,134 students as bona fide beneficiaries of the state government’s sponsorship for the examination.

“Suffice to say that the state government paid N1.577 billion as examination fees for 58,188 students who were captured for year 2024 WASSCE.”
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Tertiary Institutions, Tolani Sule, disclosed that about N100.8 million were disbursed by the state government to 1,165 students as bursaries and scholarships in the last one year.

He stated that all the state universities are making remarkable progress, including the two newly established ones. He further said that Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) had not only got National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation for its courses but also professional bodies’ accreditation for many of its courses.
