Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, political activist, Omoyele Sowore, and other agitators under the Coalition of Nigerian Patriots have demanded that Nigerians should be allowed to acquire firearms to defend themselves against attack.

According to them, such approval would put an end to the incessant killings and genocidal attacks going on in Benue, Plateau, Kwara and other places in the country.

They made the demand at a press conference held in Abuja on Friday.

The proposal comes barely five months after the lawmaker representing Delta North senatorial district, Ned Nwoko, sponsored a bill to allow citizens to have access to firearms.

The legislator explained that the bill was borne out of desperation for the citizens to protect themselves against the rising insecurity, stressing that the Police were ill-funded and do not have enough manpower needed to secure Nigeria.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Dalung said it was unfortunate that gruesome killings had been allowed to escalate across Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Kogi, Kwara and a few parts of the North West with lives, properties and livelihoods destroyed in the process.

He said, “Even more disturbing is a viral video where a self-identified Fulani coalition openly claimed responsibility for the killings and issued conditions to the Federal Government. The question to ask is: Who are their sponsors? Are they within the corridors of power?”

“These individuals, who have brazenly confessed to these crimes, must be arrested and prosecuted without delay. Their impunity further erodes public trust and emboldens more violence. I align myself with the submission of others.

“If the state can’t protect Nigerians, the National Assembly, through voice votes, should amend the constitution to allow Nigerians to bear firearms. After all, it was the same voice votes they used to legalise the state of emergency in Rivers. They don’t even need a quorum anymore.”

Continuing, Dalung further chided the Presidency over what he described as slow response and alleged misrepresentation of the massacre happening in the affected communities.

Earlier in his submission, human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, echoed the same view, arguing that in a multi-culture and ethnic contraption like Nigeria, it was obvious the police had been overstretched, hence the need to grant licence for Nigerians to protect themselves.

“If we are fully convinced as I am that security agencies have failed, let’s allow people to buy guns to protect themselves. If we all have guns, who will dare to invade Plateau or Benue to terrorise the communities?” he queried.

In his address, Sowore said most Nigerians had lost confidence in the security agencies.

While describing the operatives as incompetent, the former African Action Congress presidential candidate, described the rising cases of insecurity across the country in the last few months as an indication that the Police hierarchy had run out of ideas.

He said, “We see what they have done so far as total failure. Anybody who identifies as Nigerian deserves protection. What has become clear is that we can’t have a crime of this magnitude without their enablers in government.

“If you look at the calibre of guns being used in these genocidal attacks, you will understand what I mean. They are not just military-grade; they are the type that can penetrate houses and metals. One thing we like to warn Nigerians about is that no matter how you take this thing for granted, one day it may be your turn.”

It will be worse than the insecurity the country is presently facing.

The present numbers of the security personnel in the country will be doubled to meet the needs of the people.because the nation will literally be in a war mode as insecurity will become worse

Many age long disagreement will be settled through the barrel of the gun, families will be wiped off from the face of the earth out of jealousy and hate.

Blacks are born and filled with hate and wickedness, they can't handle firearms,it will surely be abused

Hehehe.

We don't need legalization of arms in Nigeria.
We have a very bad or no data base in Nigeria.

The legalization will lead to anarchy. What we need in Nigeria is a federal government that will prioritize security.

The government should stop playing politics with human lives. They should start treating terrorists as terrorists.

If possible get paid foreign mercenaries involved. No shame in doing so,most countries do the same.

The foreign mercenaries will flush out these useless people. They don't care which tribe or religion you belong.

As for the Nigerian army, they will be doing the clearing.

If the security agents have lived up to expectations, and do their works, nobody would have called for this.
And certainly this is a recipe for anarchy, but the killer h.e.r.d.s.m.e.n will surely hear am.
The i.d.i.o.t.s will think twice before attacking anybody.
Re: Killings: Ex-Sport Minister, Others Want Gun Approval For Citizens by Sheuns(m): 6:32am On Apr 26, 2025
Our lawmakers need to start pushing for gun ownerships by citizens.

If an assailant thinks the people he’s going to attack may have guns just like he does, he’ll rethink his decision.
Re: Killings: Ex-Sport Minister, Others Want Gun Approval For Citizens by Racoon(m):
Of course! With Armed Fulanis killing innocent nationals in an annihilation conquest and the complicit of the national security architecture, legalization of self protection is the sure bet.
Re: Killings: Ex-Sport Minister, Others Want Gun Approval For Citizens by RevenuesBoost(f):
Citizens owning guns is the best thing to put terrorism in check.

If everyone is armed, they'll think twice before attacking anyone.

Re: Killings: Ex-Sport Minister, Others Want Gun Approval For Citizens by richmond500: 6:35am On Apr 26, 2025
Most Nigerians are poor and hungry and frustrated
Giving them guns won't be a good thing.

We are only worried about how it will stop FH killings, but have we analysed what will happen after the killings have stopped?

Agreed with everything you wrote but the question is who now protects the people that are being slaughtered? The funny part is the same Govt thats arming the perpetrators, How many times have we seen or read about soldiers, police, politicians and co working along side bandits, kidnappers, cultist and co.
Well to me anyways if you cant protect yourself and family legal or illegal then you dont deserve to live.

If not that this country is doomed, Fulani don't need approval to own guns but law abiding citizens need approval to own guns?
Re: Killings: Ex-Sport Minister, Others Want Gun Approval For Citizens by Cmanforall: 7:01am On Apr 26, 2025
I knew it will be Dalong

Approving guns for citizens will be difficult to control. Is like giving the police extra work

Because they are not searched by the police when seen. Just as police will search people's trunk, Fulani herdsmen should be randomly searched.
