The Akwa Ibom State government say it has entered a bond with its medical trainees to to protect its investment and prevent them from absconding.

The government said this is one of its strategies to stop brain drain of its trained medical professionals trained, saying it is now mandatory for them to serve the state before they leave the country for greener pastures.

Head of Civil Service, Elder Effiong Essien, stated during the weekend in Uyo.

Essien said the state government would recruit 600 medical personnel as well as 100 occupational safety officers into the newly created Department of Occupational Safety in the Office of the Head of Service.

Every person that government is sending out on training now is bonded to serve the government for a period that government would have recovered the investment on their training.

“The bonding is a very serious issue now, so none of them will escape. For the medical doctors, we go as far as the Medical Council that usually gives clearance for any professional who is travelling out of the country.

So if we send your name that government has trained you, you are under bond to serve the government, so the Medical Council will not allow such a person travel out again,” he stated.

The HOS announced that the government has disbursed N60 billion out of the over N90 billion owed in gratuities, promotions, and other arrears to its workforce.

He explained that Governor Umo Eno has prioritized the welfare of workers’ since he assumed office 23 months ago, noting that the consistent release of funds toward clearing long-standing gratuity debts is a demonstration of his commitment to the well-being of retired and active civil a d public servants in the state.

He revealed that so far, the government has refunded the 7.5 percent contributory pension to 15 Local Education Authorities, adding that Governor Eno has been releasing N500 million monthly to settle outstanding contributions.

“Governor Umo Eno has proven that workers’ welfare is not just a campaign promise but a practical commitment. The productivity index across ministries has significantly improved as a result.

“The administration is steadily closing the gaps left by years of neglect. We’re not just playing catch-up; we’re building a sustainable structure,” he stated.

This country. What's the job availability and security ratio compared to her graduate pool?

National unemployment rate is at 33%, with Akwa Ibom pegged at 50%.
Economic instability.
Underfunded Health Sector
Poor Infrastructure
Up to 10 times lower wages than obtainable abroad.
Poor job satisfaction.
Worsening insecurity targeting earners like them.
Unfair labour practices and rights violation by global standards.

But let's ignore all these root causes and force them to stay.

That won't prevent them from relocating...!

Any young Doctor with the means can relocate, study medicine again, and start practicing.

You guys still don't get it...!

Forcing them to stay and suffer in the deplorable conditions is not the solution.

These same people forcing these Doctors to stay back will never allow them treat them and their families.

Even the Minister of Health and most Health commissioners don't use Nigerian Health care facilities.

No matter how you design the laws to force brains from leaving, nations that value and need them will fashion ways to make it easier for them to come in.

If, for instance, Australia needs 1000 Doctors urgently from the developing nations, they know precisely what to do to bring them in from their nations...!

"In utmost sincerity, if I were fortuitously enumerated among the distinguished health personnel of Akwa Ibom State, I would, without hesitation, append my illustrious signature to the aforementioned oath with all the solemnity of a man pledging allegiance to the flag. However, let it be inscribed upon the tablets of posterity that should the celestial portals of opportunity swing open — be it in Canada, the United Kingdom, or the distant shores of New Zealand — I shall, with neither guilt nor apology, activate my diplomatic legs and migrate with the velocity of divine mandate. Loyalty is noble, but destiny, my brothers and sisters, is irresistible."

To stop brain drain? Just make the system viable enough for this young dudes to operate that's all. Who has the wherewithal to live will still live. You can force a horse to the stream but can't force the horse to drink water.

Make the health sector competitive and add certain incentives , no one will leave.

Even some private companies make employees sign a bond before making serious investment for some critical training so it's nothing new if a state government does same undecided

Almost everybody that commented before me either didn't read the body of the article, or didn't understand the true agreement that the state government is having with the Trainees.

They obviously just read the subject and rushed to comment.

If you are able to survive the Access Bank Training school, and get an offer from the bank... Apart from providing a guarantor, they'll ask you to sign a bond that you won't resign your employment within 2 years of on boarding. Else, you pay a fine of 2m. I don't know if this amount has been reviewed.

This is because the bank trained you for free. They even paid you stipends while training you.
You can't just wake up 3 months after onboading and decide to cross carpet to GTB.. What happens to the bank's investment on you?

If the state government are sending 600 health workers abroad to go and study or gather some extra knowledge, it isn't out of place to introduce the condition that you must work with a state government parastatal for a given number of years, before you are eligible to resign.

The state government has to recoup their investment, since you were trained with tax payers money.

Good, they need to do everything to prevent those half-baked Drs from coming into the UK especially.
Most of them are so incompetent, I always request never to be attended to by these doctors and nurses from Nigeria.
I remember one watching NSPPP on duty while I was on admission and neglecting patients to pains, I secretly recorded her and sent it to her Trust and I was happy the punishment she got.
Nigerian Doctors should stay in Nigeria with the poor facilities and inadequate machines pls

Nothing demarkets a nation more than poor and corrupt leadership.

Fix the nation, and the worst naysayers won't have anything to demarket.
