Justice Served: What We Must Learn from Osinachi’s Tragic Story

Today, Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the FCT High Court, Abuja, sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging for culpable homicide.

This judgment is more than just a headline.

It reminds us that abuse is not a family matter; it is a crime against humanity.

For years, Osinachi inspired millions with her songs.
Yet behind the beautiful voice was a broken woman , battered by the very man who vowed to protect her.

Her death in 2022 shook the nation.
Today, her case teaches us bitter truths:

Marriage is not a prison.

Endurance is not a virtue when it costs your life.

Silence empowers abusers.

Domestic violence is no longer "a private issue", it’s now a crime under Nigerian law.

The VAPP Act is active. Ignorance is no longer an excuse.


To anyone suffering abuse: Your life is precious.
There’s no prize for suffering in silence.
There’s no shame in walking away to live.

To society: We must stop telling victims to “pray harder” or “endure for the sake of the children.”
Religion and culture should never be weaponized against survival.

The usual lopsided judgment in Nigeria. Did he murder her, did he force her to remain in the marriage or she kept trying to save face cos of her believes. Thought her pastor who is also a doctor said she had some liver disease?

To those who count this as the right justice, for me, it is a judgment against a poor man.

Did he kill her? Was there any report of him beating her or just hearsays? Did her pastor not testify she is sick? Was she obligated to remain in the marriage?

1. What the f-ck am I reading here? Does he literally need to stab her in the heart before we can ascertain that she died as a result of the wounds and assault from his many beatings?

2. Yes, you mean his four kids did not testify to their father severely beating their mother in front of them? The pastor who kept sending her back into that battlefield did not confess to having known of the many assaults before she eventually died? Where the wounds were reported to have been found all over her body as a result of her falling down a cliff during a mountain climbing incident?

The judgement was based on sentiments and nothing was proven. How could he have been guilty of culpable homicide when she suffered an underlying ailment? In as much as I am against domestic abuse, Osinachi made the wrong decision by staying in an abusive marriage. The man shouldn't be punished for her stupidity. He should get a good lawyer to appeal the judgement.

Why is the word of a fraudulent miracle monger — yes, Enenche is after all a scammer-in-the-lords—of greater substance in this? Where are the doctors' reports to certify that the chest problems were not a result of beatings?

1. Ah! So, someone manipulated the kids into lying against their own father after their mother's death? Are you insinuating the kids were imbe_ciles and so their testimonies in this should not have been trusted? However, the testimony of a complete outsider who never lived in the home with the man and his wife should be, without even any signed report be valued?? 😲😲😲😲😨😨😨😨

Justice has never been about bringing back the dead but more about righting a wrong, albeit in the Nigerian situation, it is quite hard to see how anything right can come from a system so turned up on its head. That said, justice should be pursued no matter what.

2. No question that she died cheaply! Even that lady who we heard died because her husband could not pay the bill also died cheaply. But that should never stop the wheels of justice in their tracks, and it should not be reason enough to say, "No!" to justice.

I am not against pursuing justice; however, I am strictly a 'prevention is better than cure' person. Even if the husband is skinned alive, it doesn't bring her back. That woman had a message which is now buried because she hated herself.
