While it is true that the pope had immense power in those as a result of the power and dominance of the Roman empire at that time, it was not the reason the English king broke away england from Roman Catholic. He did so because he took a second wife and the pope threatened to excommunicate him. Instead of him to bow to the Pope ad rescind his decision, he ignored the pope and broke away england from the Roman Catholic Church, and formed the church of England ( Anglican church) . This happened during the time of pope Nicholas.

1.Back then European succession placed a lot of importance on having sons to take over

The pope is a head of state (Vatican).. so it is a common courtesy for head of states/president's to attend a funeral of one of their own..

Some president sent representatives, some attended in person.

King Henry XVIII formed Anglican church because pope refused him to Marry another wife because his first wife which was the wife of hi late brother Arthur was unable to bear children especially male child. Upon marrying another wife she couldn't bear child..he later killed the woman for adultery allegedly. He married a daughter to his former mistress and never bore him any child ..
