Why would you leave your students stranded?

But he has a point. I can't imagine sending Nigerians to France to study English! That's laughable

If the findings of the minister are true, then I fully support his submission. FSB, PTDF and NDDC are there for Nigerians to benefit from. Nigeria has no business sending non-STEM graduates abroad to study. STEM courses drive innovation and national development.

The FG should redirect that scholarship fund to support every first-class graduate (irrespective of their discipline) with at least N5 million to start life after school. Those in STEM whose final year projects can solve Nigeria's problems without a first class should also get the same sum. That's how you encourage competitiveness and excellence in your country.
Indeed, those were Part of SCAMS ,Put in place by Former Govts-without any Directions, but like NEPA -DISCOS,NATIONAL GRID,PDTF,etc.
Most of these Convoluted Schemes - are thrives in Corruption by the Officials - who never Accounted for anything.
In fact, they placed their Friends, Family Members, just to enjoy the goodies - to the detriment of the Best Youths and the Masses.
-For example - how many of the BEA- Scholarship Students usually returns back home to Nigeria?
-Can those in Charge of these Foreign Scholarships Schemes - Publish the Numbers of those Regions and Areas,as well as the Courses -that have been Collecting them- for the Public to see?
•-Na Food For the Boys In Power'- Nothing Like Accountability,Transparency and Probity - Since they were Established - Purely Feeding On The Public Menu.
That is Nigeria For you.
It's good riddance for bad rubbish.

They sent their students to learn from US, Germany and the rest.

Then came back and funded these student would became expert in starting up business.

Oversees training is very important
In Nigeria, every good schemes copied from somewhere else are always dodged by corruption and inefficiency. If only you know how many government sponsored foreign scholars roam the street jobless while jobs are giving to challants who. Even the money they claim they want to save will end up being stolen.

I think the minister did the right. I will give this one to druggie and his team. Highly commendable.
Remove money for petrol and currency subsidy = give small bags of rice here and there ...... embezzle the rest

Remove money for oversea training = give small local scholarship like 100k, embezzle the rest

Na same format...the three arms of govt just want more money in their pocket

.only few local student will benefit as usual, ghost names used to balance the rest....

Nigerian politicians have no shred of good in them...
.... Every year these student that go abroad cry as their allowances and health insurance are embezzled.....same happens to TETfund beneficiaries at PhD level...

Re: FG Ends Bilateral Education Agreement Foreign Scholarship Programme by HausaIgboYoruba: 8:13am On Apr 30, 2025
Scrapping BEA while failing to meet obligations like ASUU's demands only worsens the education crisis. Most emerging economies invest in sending their citizens abroad to gain knowledge, then create incentives for them to return and contribute. Why should Nigeria be any different?

Instead of cutting programs, the government should focus on job creation, strengthening local education, and leveraging the knowledge of Nigerians trained abroad.

Was there any agreement in place before they issued the scholarship?

Blame the government that should have put checks and balances in place but didn't

While on PTDF scholarship in UK, PTDF sent some of its staff to UK to "see" us. We asked if they could grant us job offers when we conclude our programme but they said are we not grateful they gave us the scholarship, should they also be giving us work? (as if it na dem papa money dem take sponsor us)

The most beneficiaries of this scheme is the north. Most southerner don't know things like that exist in the first place let alone push for it.
The earlier we know this country is for the north and the rich, the better for the southern masses.
Our leaders in the south have mortgaged our rights to our common patrimony for their own benefits.
Why the north is shouting and fighting Tinubu is still not for the interest of the masses but the man is undoing their monopoly in so many areas. The problem I have with him is that he's committing the same offence he's undoing by not being fair and non biased.

Anyway it shall be well with us

Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scholarship programme is of no use to the nation. Na wayo from the beginning.

Only PTDF and NDDC scholarship make sense.
ptdf and nddc make sense in what way?

but if the money were channeled to more students, esp the brilliant students and those who cant afford going to school, then it's good. I believe this one benefits the rich more than the poor.

An average Nigerian is selfish and self centred, they would find it difficult to return.
Place them on an oaths, they still not return.

I feel it is wrong to end the scheme. What it needs is a thorough review. The program should be refocused on only STEM courses. There's no way you can tell me that Chinese universities don't offer better engineering programs than ours. Send students meritoriously to the likes of China and Turkey and you'll see wonders.
Re: FG Ends Bilateral Education Agreement Foreign Scholarship Programme by Agugbadin: 10:55am On Apr 30, 2025
The best way to go .I like BEA program abroad should be cancelled outrightly. It is one of the waste pipe through which public fund is being siphoned

You just open mouth waa and yarn nonsense out of it...you can very much make your statement without saying what you don't know...the scheme was a good one at the start of it.

Things only began to really spoil toward d end of gej and of course Start of Buhari tenure...that was when they really started to mess things up with complete politics....d rest still have good level of merit vs political candidates...

Secondly....the decision is a good one...500usd is not enough money to survive almost anywhere outside this country...where as
.dame money will conveniently feed about four public university students and they will be very grateful....if they can reuse the budget this way..they wld have achieved more with same amount

I guess you don't know when this was established. Many foreign-trainedprofessionals today in the industries or Universities are beneficiaries of this BEA.

You're very correct. I remember my time just immediately after undergraduate studies at UNN. We had already left school. I was called by different friends that my name appeared on a list for an assessment test for an FG scholarship. We came to school on a short notice. We observed that the list was made up of the top performers from each department. Some of my colleagues had come from far away places like Lagos and Abuja, some used night bus, some others had to fly, to be able to meet up cos of the very short notice.

As students waited outside, a group of people arrived (the supposed examiners) and in a commando style, tore away the list which had names of students arranged department by department without any explanation whatsoever. They pasted a new smaller list of just a few "chosen" names and then used it for accreditation and admittance into the examination hall. We were bewildered but could do nothing than just talk at them, but they didn't seem to care or respond to us. The new names on the list entered for the exams and the rest was history
