As long as we'll still need to appear in their office for capturing, extortion will still continue. Passport offices in Nigeria made me understand that our politicians are truly reflections of majority of Nigerians. Nobody can convince me otherwise.

The system will only work if Nigerians refuse the short cut, but as it is the system is rigged to fail because the immigration officials exploit the loopholes like server downtimes and even deliberately hoard booklets until you cough up their usual bribe demands. The article is suggesting functional complaint lines as one of the ways to curb this. Block the loopholes and compel the officers to do the right thing.

See, we still have a long way to go because us Nigerians have a very terrible mindset about going through short cuts and enabling corruption by being corrupt ourselves.

You couldn't have said it better. My sibling just did his passport and paid 70k, while the officer who did mine years back told me last month that the 5 year passport is now 80k. Just imagine o. Despite everything the government put in place to stop this, they are still running their extortion schemes. Nigerians are the problem, not just the government because the government is a reflection of the populace.

Other than the chip in the new passport, I don't see anything new in the process. I got my old passport from New York about 10 years ago, the process was the same. Filled the form and made payment online. Only went to the office to capture and collected same day.

Until some immigration officials are jailed, the sharp practices will continue.

120 k for 10 years here in ogun state, 20 k to make it fast, after the capturing, they still ask for settlement,no shame at all, they only warned us not to use our phones, I noticed a big bag full of money. Those guys are making crazy money per day.. Forget the top politicians, Corruption in Nigeria is deep

In as much as this is a welcome development, those officers will still find a way to milk something out of you when you go for physical verification. They will either tell you directly that 'what are you going to give us?' or separate you from the people that come for manual application to frustrate the hell out of you.

You can ask anybody that apply for passport online

I applied for passport online and I did not pay any official when I went for physical verification and I goty my passport delivered to me after 5 weeks

Only few had it smooth like that. I am sure other people will tell a different story.

I hope this effort/initiative will be successful, because obtaining your passport after doing your application online is stressful.

The only way this can work is 💯 automation.
Remove the human element completely..
Online application, biometrics, capturing...everything online. Afterwards print and deliver the passport to the nearest NIPOST office or pay extra for home delivery..
That's the only way it will work efficiently and effectively.
As long as the corrupt NIS officer has any say along the process..bribes will be forced and the system will crash.
