The Truth About Nigeria’s Presidential Rotations by TonyeBarcanista(op): 3:20pm On May 01, 2025
Supporters of Atiku Abubakar often argue that Southern presidents (Obasanjo and Jonathan) served 13 years, Northerners (Yaradua and Buhari) 10, and with incumbent Tinubu’s term ending in 2027, the South’s total would reach 17 years, justifying a northward power shift in 2027. Similarly, some supporters of Peter Obi claim that for equity, the presidency should be streamlined to the South, specifically, Southeast, as no Igbo has been president since 1999. Both arguments are flawed and misleading.

Political parties nominate candidates based on their internal agreements, and one party’s arrangement does not bind another, regardless of election outcomes.

In 1999, PDP fielded Chief Olusegun Obasanjo (Yoruba, South) and won, while APP chose Chief Olu Falae (Yoruba, South), who lost.

In 2003, PDP retained Obasanjo (Yoruba, South), while ANPP (formerly APP) fielded General Muhammadu Buhari (Fulani, North), and APGA selected Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu (Igbo, South).

In 2006, PDP, having fielded Southern candidates previously, agreed to rotate its presidential ticket between North and South, selecting Governor Umaru Musa Yaradua (Fulani, North) for 2007. ANPP retained Buhari (Fulani, North), AC chose Vice President Atiku Abubakar (Fulani, North), APGA kept Ojukwu (Igbo, South), DPP nominated Governor Atahiru Bafarawa (Hausa, North), and PPA fielded Governor Orji Uzor Kalu (Igbo, South). Clearly, PDP’s North-South rotation applied only to itself and never applied to other parties.

In 2011, PDP fielded incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan (Ijaw, South), who succeeded the late Yaradua, while ANPP chose Governor Ibrahim Shekarau (Hausa, North), ACN picked Mallam Nuhu Ribadu (Fulani, North), and CPC selected Buhari (Fulani, North).

Before 2015, PDP’s refusal to honor its 2006 rotation agreement by re-nominating Jonathan (Ijaw, South) sparked a crisis, leading to defections by former VP Atiku (Fulani, North), four Northern governors, one Southern governor, the House Speaker, and several legislators. The newly formed APC, a merger of ACN, CPC, and ANPP, chose Buhari (Fulani, North), who defeated the candidate of PDP.

In 2019, PDP corrected its course by fielding Atiku Abubakar (Fulani, North) per its 2006 agreement, while APC re-nominated Buhari (Fulani, North).

In 2022, APC adopted a North-South rotation agreement, ceding its 2023 ticket to the South and fielding Asiwaju Bola Tinubu (Yoruba, South). PDP opened its ticket, and Atiku (Fulani, North) emerged, sparking controversy as some argued it should have gone South. This led to a fallout, with five governors of the party (four Southern, one Northern) opposing PDP’s candidate. Meanwhile, LP fielded Peter Obi (Igbo, South), and NNPP chose Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso (Hausa, North).

This history shows that arguing for zoning or ethnic-based candidacy, like prioritizing the Southeast for an Igbo president, a Tiv president, or a North-South shift, based on another party’s arrangement or historical representation is baseless and flawed. After all, if other parties had won elections, the story of regional or ethnic representation would have been different.

Ahead of the next election, if PDP honors its 2006 agreement, its 2027 candidate must be Southern. If APC respects its 2022 deal, its candidate should also be Southern. Other parties, including newly formed ones, are not bound by zoning arrangements they did not agree to.

Presidential tickets are governed by party-specific agreements, not universal mandates or ethnic quotas. Had different parties won past elections, the regional and ethnic narrative would be entirely different, rendering tallies of past presidencies or ethnic representation irrelevant to future contests.

In all you have written, just know that southeast have decided they will never vote for PDP again until they present an Igbo man as the presidential candidate.

That is not my problem. Every eligible voters, irrespective to ethnic or political affiliation, is entitled to his preference.
Re: The Truth About Nigeria’s Presidential Rotations by LadyExcellency: 3:52pm On May 01, 2025
Without the support of Southeast, PDP is dead and buried. This useless pontification by Barcanista as to why Southeast has no claim to the presidency is why the opposition is dead in Nigeria.

PDP came second in the last election but can't mount a credible opposition to APC as was done when APC was in opposition because the party's internal democracy was betrayed by Northern power mongers by fielding Atiku Abubakar, a Northerner instead of a Southerner probably from Southeast Nigeria.

Until the issue of equity is addressed in PDP, there is no opposition to the Nigerian ruling party.

PDP is dying Tonye, PDP is almost dead. I will advise you to stop romancing a dead body, rather start finding your way to APC like you once did. You would have made it to a state house of Assembly member by now.

This lies you guys tell yourself

The key word is zoning derived from the 6 geo political zones

Comparing clamoring for a South East President (not Igbo president) to clamor for tiv president shows your intentions

Take your money to defend APC in peace and do your job but don't try to insult is with useless postulation

There is no zoning in Nigeria.. Me myself and I'm sure millions of southerners would not vote a failure like Tinubu because he is a southerner

People like you have taught me the importance of self development so that small change won't make me support things I won't do on a normal day

I can beat my chest and say No politician on earth can by my support... That's a big flex

The sad thing is people who pay you change would never rate you reason you have gotten zero appointments since 2007 you been doing this

No Tonye, we are not desperate about the presidency. It is people like you who carry the issue on your head like gala. Without you opening threads like this to complain, who gives a damn what they are doing. Be more concerned about your own survival in the midst of the directionless maladministration.

What is the meaning of this:

1) There is nothing like "Southern Nigeria". We need to get that out of the way as quick as possible.. At independence, what we had were THREE REGIONS; The North, The West and The East. As a result of the marginalisation of the then minorities of the West, a referendum was conducted in 1963 and a new region was created; The MidWest, which is basically the present day Edo and Delta States!

2) political representations have always been based on these regional realities since the colonial regimes started bringing in the locals into government following the different constitutional reviews untill the war. There was no time post amalgamation of the southern proliterate with the North, that any part of the south was lumped together with the other. So this later day attempt to lump the igbos of the south-east and their minorities neighbours in the South South with the Yorubas of the southwest, is nothing but a clever political game to use the Southwest to perennially corner all political positions at Aso Rock in the name of the amorphous "Southern Nigeria".. It won't fly..

Wether the regional make up of the country is represented politically in the constitution or not, those who continue to use their undeu advantages earned post the 1966-1970 war to corner everything for themselves, need to be stopped and the regional realities that define Nigerias politics ab intio should be respected..

Rotational presidency or nothing..

So, for the next election, it has to be a Southern candidate for both parties as you say..

But there is the risk that PDP with a southern candidate could win in 2027, and then the next issue is, he or she would wanna run in 2031....when it would be the north turn.

I hate to say this, but we mayhaps should have made rotational presidiency part of our laws.....with six year single terms.

Anyways they have always told us they don't want to Rule but prefer being Ruled.

So shall it 🙌 it be. North, SW and SS are the Rulers.

Everyone knows his category.

Re: The Truth About Nigeria’s Presidential Rotations by Odingo1: 6:00pm On May 01, 2025
You guys like lying to yourselves, the Rotation is between two tribes in Nigeria, Hausa-Fulani and Yorubas, the rest na sitdown dey look. Nothing like South and North thing. Proper thing to do in Nigeria is rotational Presidency between the six geo-political zones in Nigeria for equity. Nigeria presidency is not for only Yorubas and Hausa-Fulani people.

Re: The Truth About Nigeria’s Presidential Rotations by boringdraw: 6:03pm On May 01, 2025
A close study of Nigeria politics would have revealed this North South dichotomy as far back as pre independence.
The other parties you talked about failed woefully because the North South dichotomy was ignored so Nigerians from either side of the divide never saw them as national parties.

They only talk about rotating the presidency when a Southerner is president.
When Buhari's term was finishing, they planned to hand over to another Northerner Lawan.

Lemme ask have you ever heard a Northerner say that Power will return south when a Northerner is in power?

Show me who ignored this arrangement and didn't waste his money and time , roundly rejected by humans and the gods?
Re: The Truth About Nigeria’s Presidential Rotations by TonyeBarcanista(op): 6:06pm On May 01, 2025
Well, it now boils down to the marketing strategy of the party to win votes and secure voters confidence. The truth is that political parties are only liable to their arrangements, not anything else.

One reason rotational presidency cannot become a law is that it will be in conflict with the rights of every citizen to be voted for. Its up to parties, that sponsor candidates for elective positions, to determine how best to go about it.

You have an unnatural talent of spotting failures from afar and ensuring they fail comprehensively.

You have dedicated your life to ensuring your candidates always lose. You started from Obanikoro more than a decade ago.

I am happy that you haven't changed and you are still supporting Pdp.

In 1999 Yorubas were handed presidency on a plater of gold to placate their crying about June 12 but after that they started telling everyone is that they work for it and earn it. Only two Yorubas contested in 1999 to ensure that a Yoruba man emerges as president.
