From Toronto to Lagos: Interpol tracks stolen cars to Nigeria

International police organisation INTERPOL has traced several stolen vehicles from Canada to Nigeria, following a large-scale cross-border operation targeting vehicle trafficking in West Africa.

The operation, codenamed Safe Wheels, was carried out between 17 and 30 March 2025 across 12 West African countries, including Nigeria.

Coordinated by INTERPOL, it involved thousands of vehicle checks at land and sea borders, resulting in the detection of approximately 150 stolen vehicles and the seizure of more than 75.

A statement released from INTERPOL’s headquarters in Lyon, France, said the majority of the stolen vehicles flagged during the two-week exercise had been trafficked from Canada, with others originating from France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Toyota, Peugeot and Honda models were among the most commonly intercepted brands.

In Nigeria, officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) uncovered six stolen vehicles, mostly Toyota and Lexus hidden in freight containers reportedly shipped from Canada. Four of the cars showed signs of break-in, and all were confirmed as stolen in Canada in 2024 through checks on INTERPOL’s Stolen Motor Vehicle (SMV) database.

The SMV system, accessible by police across INTERPOL’s 196 member countries, enables officers to instantly verify if a vehicle has been reported stolen globally. In 2024 alone, over 270,000 stolen vehicles were flagged using the tool.

Speaking on the outcome of the operation, David Caunter, INTERPOL’s Director of Organized and Emerging Crime, warned that stolen vehicles often fuel broader criminal activity.

“The theft is only the beginning. Stolen vehicles are used to fund and facilitate organised crime and, in some cases, even terrorism,” he said.

Investigations into the trafficking networks are ongoing, with two major criminal groups already identified. INTERPOL has initiated 18 new probes as a result of the operation.

Operation Safe Wheels was conducted under the Project Drive Out initiative — a joint partnership between INTERPOL and the Government of Canada aimed at tackling international vehicle theft and illegal spare parts trading.

Experts from INTERPOL’s SMV Task Force, including Canadian specialists, were deployed to Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin and other participating countries to assist with enforcement and forensic checks.

The discovery of stolen Canadian vehicles in Lagos is expected to further deepen cooperation between Nigerian authorities and Canada’s INTERPOL National Central Bureau as the investigation continues.

Our ports can’t keep being playgrounds for criminals.
It’s time for Customs, security agencies, and port authorities to wake up.
If we don’t secure our borders, we’re not just importing cars — we’re importing crime.

Nigeria is beyond redemption honestly.

The only way for Nigerians to stand a chance with the world again is by peacefully dividing Nigeria using the existing 6-geopolitcal zone as template for 6 new countries but if any region or regions then want to sincerely merge together, they can do so willingly on their own.

With that, Nigerians will get a new name, new nation, new leaders, new values and new passports.

Second alternative is to restructure Nigeria using the 6 geopolitical zones to make 6 independent regions of Nigeria and then change the name from Nigeria to "United Regions of Africa" (URA).

With this, Nigeria will get a new name, new system of government, renewed spirit, new passport and new national policies to set Nigeria on the pathway to communal progress for all

Without this, Nigeria goes no where, sadly angry

It is well.
Re: From Toronto To Lagos: Interpol Tracks Stolen Cars To Nigeria by Saturnalia(m):
Tooooh! You don’t need to go far, just go to the Nairaland Auto Section and see “Armed Robbers and Kidnappers” masquerading as Car Dealers advertising Brand New AMG 63 G-Wagon, Brand New Lexus LX570 & LX600, Brand New Bentley Bentley Bentaga, Brand New Rolls Royce Cullinan and Lamborghini Urus.

Shey Lamborghini, Bentley and Rolls Royce get dealerships for Nigeria ni ?

One of the Car Dealers on Nairaland is known for pushing his threads to the front page advertising CURRENT PRICES OF “Flooded and Accidented” Cars at EXORBITANT & RIDICULOUS RATES.

What these Shady & Dubious Car Dealers do is very simple.

They contract Ghanaians who are known for burgling Car Dealership Stores in Amerika and Canada overnigh, and then the Ghanaians sell these stolen vehicles to the Nigerians Auto Dealers at less than 20% of the actual price; who in turn ship these cars to Nigeria and advertising them at ridiculously high prices while blaming the Dollar and the Economy for their insatiable greed.

Funnily enough, majority of them are from the part of Nigeria where crime is ingrained their DNA and they are the same people attempting to foist their “Overnight Messiah” Nigerians as the President.

The Interpol should, as a matter of urgency, raid all the Car Lots in Nigeria and confiscate all these stolen vehicles and prosecute all the owners of these Car Lots and their Agents, advertising stolen vehicles both on Jiji and Nairaland.

After this exercise, You will discover that 95% of these Car Dealers will go out of business because majority of them are selling stolen vehicles.

I think the fault is from them for lack of doing proper checks on vehicles shipments from their own sea boarders . If their own sea boarders are tight and we'll secured those cars won't be able to leave the country in the first place .
