What Are The Responsibilities Of Our Elected Officials At The State Level? by showboy2301(op): 1:25pm On May 02, 2025
Hello everyone, I've been thinking about the complaints and lamentations of our people in every state of Nigeria. I realised that we are all pointing fingers at the federal government.

Do you think the federal government is in charge of security of each state?
Can we hold the state officials accountable for whatever is happening in each state?
Governors, House of assembly members, Local government chairmen, Councillors; what are they really doing to better the life of their community?

Please share your views and opinions. Way forward is welcome too.

Thank you

The state is the most powerful tier of government in Nigeria because they have PAYE as a constitutional revenue source. If any state taxes its HNIs and workers, they will not need to wait for allocations

You are right, but why do we all pretend or ignore the fact that we should hold the states responsible for our safety and other things instead of federal government?

That is a big question which I have been asking for years. If the oil money were not there, states will go back to their constitutional revenue source and they will have to be sending a percentage to the federal government.

Even without the oil money, some states can generate revenue on their own with little or no involvement of the federal government. I guess we like to point fingers in Nigeria than taking actions

Maybe I can learn a lot from you since I didn't attend a secondary school.

I have said it a countless times. The set of most privileged people in Nigeria are the 36 State Governors. Followed by the 774 Local Government Chairmen/Caretakers who most times are still puppets of the State Governors.

Why? Because no matter how corrupt, inefficient, docile, clueless, insensitive, useless the Governors may be, the President will always take the fall for their inefficiencies.

Nigerians have been mentally programmed and groomed to think that 99% of their problem is from the Federal Government when the direct opposite is the case.

Everybody knows Tinubu but ask them the name of their local government chairman and watch them look as clueless as a lost sheep.

Even the President's son who hold no official position is more popular than their local government chairmen who collect hundreds of millions (some even billions) in allocation monthly.

Ask them what their Governors do with monthly security votes and watch them mumble gibberish.

They will tell you the Police, the Army, the DSS are all apparatus of the FG and not under the control of the State Governors, but sexually assault the child of a governor, make disparaging comments about a governor on social media, threaten the Governor's sister-in-law, then you will know that they have control over the security architecture in their states with influences even beyond.

Like Mrs. Natasha has said, many Nigerians are G&H. Even the ones you think are educated, do not ask the right questions. They all follow the band wagon. Seeking for a Messiah in the President while the people closest to them; Ward Councillors, LG Chairmen, State Governors, Members of the State Houses of Assembly, and their Federal Reps/Senators are feeding fat on their collective resources and individual gullibility.

At the beginning of his administration, Tinubu almost went into a subtle war with the Governors. At some point, he was literally pleading that they should allow people in their states feel the impact of governance. Since FAAC allocation almost tripled, how has it impacted the lives of Nigerians at the state level? Why do we call Governors CHIEF SECURITY OFFICER of their respective states?

FG has no business with the bad roads in your village. FG has no business with your faulty transformer. FG has no business with waste collection and disposal in your community. I can go on and on. FG dragged the States to court and won, now LGs can receive allocation directly. Since that judgement and it's consequent implementation, how have you benefitted at the grassroot level?

Since electricity generation was moved to concurrent from exclusive list, how many state governors have been proactive about that development as an opportunity to generate electricity that is sufficient for their state and even sellable to neighboring states?

But yeah, let us keep screaming Tinubu this, Seyi that, while those 36 men milk us dry. We go dey alright. cheesy

Yes, but we over look the immediate leader's responsibilities and focus on federal.

Toh

It seems like Nigerians are now waking up.

We have shifted all our energy on the FG while neglecting the happenings in states

They are all busy looting.. all of them without exception.
The ijekuje that they are eating won't allow them think outside the box on ways to secure their constituents and citizens in their States.
They take the easy shortcut.. point to the FG.

Their responsibility is to decamp with the State Governor to any party the Governor decamps to.
Kiss the truth.
Our democratic structure have collapsed under this regime.
Nigeria is gradually sliding into a one party system.
Governor's are no more relevant.
They now rush to o London to beg the President to forgive them and cancel their suspension.
They also go and kneel before the FCT Minister to beg.
A whole seating and elected Governor.
I remember how powerful the Governor's forum was when Rotimi Ameachi was Chairman.
Our state officials are bunch of house boy's to the governor.
