On Friday, May 2, 2025, popular Nigerian social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), was reportedly arrested by officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja under controversial circumstances.

According to multiple eyewitnesses and online reports, the arrest took place shortly after VDM visited a branch of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) with his mother to clarify unauthorized debit alerts linked to her account. VDM had earlier taken to social media to express outrage over continuous deductions allegedly marked as loan repayments, which he maintained his mother never initiated.

The visit to GTBank was expected to resolve the matter amicably. However, shortly after arriving at the bank premises, VDM was reportedly whisked away by plain-clothed police officers. Videos and voice notes from witnesses, including his close associate Koko Pee, flooded the internet shortly after, raising alarm over the activist's sudden disappearance.

The circumstances surrounding VDM’s arrest have sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians questioning whether the move was politically motivated. While initial reports linked GTBank to the arrest due to the banking dispute, online speculations quickly shifted toward Seyi Tinubu, son of the Nigerian president. This followed VDM’s recent public criticism of Seyi Tinubu over alleged misconduct.

Though no concrete evidence has surfaced linking the President’s son to the arrest, the timing and VDM’s outspoken nature against political figures have fueled public suspicion.

In a disturbing twist, Koko Pee later claimed—citing insider sources—that VDM was not only arrested but also allegedly transferred to the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he was reportedly beaten and seriously injured.

He further added that they had no information on VDM’s whereabouts for hours, and all efforts to locate him proved abortive.

The public is now demanding answers from all involved parties. GTBank, in particular, is under pressure to clarify its role in the unfolding drama, as VDM was last seen within its premises. Many believe the bank should issue a public statement addressing the incident and VDM’s safety.
"GTBank, please tell Nigerians where VeryDarkMan is. He entered your bank alive and hasn’t been seen since. You have no legal or moral right to aid an unlawful arrest—or worse, a cover-up."

Similarly, the EFCC has been urged to confirm whether VDM is indeed in its custody and explain the grounds for his arrest. If allegations of torture or abuse are found to be true, it would further damage the credibility of Nigeria’s law enforcement institutions, already widely criticized for human rights violations.

VDM’s arrest once again highlights the shrinking space for dissent and free speech in Nigeria. The activist, known for his fiery social media posts calling out corruption, injustice, and celebrity excesses, has faced multiple arrests in the past, many of which are perceived as attempts to silence him.

Human rights activist, Comrade Deji Adeyanju, also condemned the arrest in strong terms, calling it an outright abuse of power and an attack on civil liberty.
"JUST IN: VDM arrested by the police at GTB. Spoke to them before he was arrested. This is absolutely unacceptable. Demanding accountability is not a crime."

He further disclosed that VDM was arrested alongside his friend, C Park, while their mother was left alone in the bank. Deji Adeyanju has now issued a stern warning to both the bank and security agencies:
“We will sue GTB and the security agencies responsible for the arrest of VDM if he’s not released with immediate effect.”

The silence from relevant authorities is deafening. As the country awaits official clarification, the demand remains the same: Where is VeryDarkMan? What are the charges? And under what legal process was he taken?

Until concrete answers are provided, this arrest will continue to symbolize the unjust treatment of voices of dissent in Nigeria’s democratic space.

The guy gets more than enough enemies to arrest him. Tinubu son , Tinubu himself, Abike Dabiri, Iyabo Ojo, etc Police, EFCC GTB.etc... He has done more bads than goods
