Popular Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, recently shared some deep truths on the #WithChude podcast live edition. She spoke on how society puts too much pressure on women when it comes to fertility and childbirth.

According to her, women carry unnecessary shame when they face issues like fibroids or difficulty getting pregnant. She even revealed that she had her twin boys through surrogacy and spoke about how many women are silently battling these issues because of the fear of judgment.

In her words: “There is so much shame around issues of fertility... I just think it’s too much of a burden for women.”

This is a powerful reminder that everyone’s journey is different, and as a society, we need to stop making women feel like they’ve failed just because their path to motherhood isn’t “conventional.”

The current generation is not ready to move past the culture of shame around fertility. That seems to be the problem. Take the situation with IVF and the religious Nigerians out there. A good number of the testimonies regarding childbirth given in your churches today are the result of IVF— artificial insemination. However, this fact is rarely mentioned during the pulpit testimonials(not even the names of doctors responsible for the miracles are hinted at).

If it wasn’t a natural birth, she should disappear with her story of accomplishment.
