With this your write-up, i feel that, the Nigerians coming back, cant keep pace with an organize, sanitize, strict and regulated place. They(nigerians) want a place were they can always compromise and bend the law. Now, am beginning to believe that corruption is in every DNA of Nigerian citizens. What is the cause of the bolded. Is it still our leaders that is cause? Laird: |

Gerrard59:This is NOT the first major migration from Nigeria. There's a prior experience that can be studied to understand what is likely to happen. All anyone needs to do is research the massive return of diasporans to Nigeria in the mid 1970s to early 1980s. Many left Nigeria, returned to Nigeria and left again. Careful study will lead a reasonable person to conclude that less than 5% of Nigerian migrants who left in the big wave starting around 2014 will return to Nigeria permanently. In fact there's a trend of wealthy older Nigerians moving to the US & UK to retire. There are DOZENS such people in my social circle in the medium sized city I live in...I've given examples with identifying info except for names. For example I know a former CBN Governor who retired to New Jersey and a NAFDAC executive who lives in the same town with me. Gerrard59:Nobody is harassing those with legal papers or citizenship. The only major negative change is for CRIMINALS without legal basis for their stay. There's also SOME danger for legal residents who offend the government in some way...which includes crime of any kind. That's all. ILLEGAL MIGRANTS with no criminal record are under no pressure at all. That's fact that even Federal Government officials are openly acknowledging and that combined with no movement on protections for corruption like with the Epstein Files is WHY Trump's approval ratings are low. Before Trump ILLEGAL MIGRANTS in many States had more economic rights than citizens. Yes, that is true. In fact it's correct to say that while Mr Trump has acted decisively in CLOSING the borders to illegal immigrants, he is FAILING in his effort to rid the USA of illegal immigrants already inside the country. He has failed, in fact his performance is terribly poor. When discussing the merits of migration from Nigeria, bear the following in mind - attaining the world middle class standard of living in Nigeria requires extraordinary assets - could be talent, beauty, ambition, aggression, psychopathy or massive social or financial capital. Or maybe extraordinary luck. Private car ownership or good public transport is a marker of the middle class. Check this out this data for Nigeria, a country with over 120 million people, possibly 200 million...same number with South Africa, a country of 60 million. https://www.google.com/search?q=total+number+of+cars+in+Nigeria&oq=total+number+of+cars+in+Nigeria&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIICAEQABgWGB4yCAgCEAAYFhgeMg0IAxAAGIYDGIAEGIoFMg0IBBAAGIYDGIAEGIoFMg0IBRAAGIYDGIAEGIoFMgoIBhAAGKIEGIkFMgcIBxAAGO8FMgcICBAAGO8FMgcICRAAGO8F0gEHNjc1ajBqOagCDrACAfEFcLvblR1gke3xBXC725UdYJHt&client=ms-android-samsung-gn-rev1&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8 In the Anglo-West, an illegal migrant with somewhat below or average endowments can achieve world middle class standard of living within a demographic generation, which is 25 years. Anyway here's a recent Jakpada who is still in Nigeria. She only spent 2 years abroad and has no regrets returning to live in PH. Probably went to do Masters degree and we know how expensive that is for most. So she's likely from a well to do background with lots of socio-economic capital in Nigeria. Most notable to me is her commentary on financial desperation and deterioration of morals, the anything goes kind of mentality that has taken hold. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9yKtxaI5_A?si=a7FfCYsS0pS9S_0X Good Luck to Nigeria. |

IbeOkehie:Less than 5% is very low. I foresee at least half returning. Nevertheless, I agree with you regarding the previous japa generation who returned and japa'd again. Hopefully a study will be conducted to ascertain why. |

Gerrard59:They re-migrated because Nigeria is a difficult place to make a living and achieve progress. I personally know MANY such people, I've talked to MANY of them at length about it. Some of the stories are fascinating. The musings of Prof. Pius Adesanmi, the late Nigerian-Canadian writer/blogger, are useful to get the point....he said he and his siblings often cursed whatever it was that made his parents leave the UK and return to Nigeria in the 1970s. Most of such families couldn't get anywhere near the living standards they enjoyed in the Anglo-West or even Germany or the Soviet Union. For example, how many people has access to PHONE SERVICE in Nigeria before 2001? Read this from Thisday of May 23, 2000 23 May 2000Most 1970's Jakpada families fell into poverty. Imagine coming from a country where phone service is universal to live in Nigeria where less than 1% of the population had phones. That's a severely diminished standard of living. The notion that 50% of the latest wave of emigres will return is fantastical. That will only happen if there's wholesale reform of the political economy. The people who witnessed what happened to the Jakpadas of the 1970s have taken the lesson to heart. Look at how they marry, invest their resources and raise their children. One can reach but one conclusion - the vast majority will not return to Nigeria. Again, many rich older Nigerians are retiring to the UK & US. The richest man in my ancestral hometown, he retired to London UK , lived there for many years and died there. Not hearsay, first hand info. Nigeria is almost a failed state. Everyone should pay careful attention to what the lady noted about the breakdown of morality and desperation for money. There's this shocking thing that should make one take it seriously - https://www.nairaland.com/8241892/dna-paternity-tests-nigeria-27 . What does that say about Nigeria? Note too that Jamaica is the only country that surpasses Nigeria in the rate of misattributed paternity. Who in 1995 or even 2005 would have thought that kidnapping innocent people for ransom would ever happen in Nigeria? It's common in Jamaica, it's come to Nigeria so this is likely to start happening in Nigeria at some point - https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jun/29/retirees-returning-to-jamaica-face-extreme-risk-say-police . I remember as a student in an FGC mingling with children of the high and mighty, I heard over and over that Nigeria could never have a one man dictator like Idi Amin. Yet Abacha happened. Nigeria is headed in the direction of the kind of animalistic wars that consumed Liberia & Sierra Leone in the 1990s. Even if there's a mass return, that guarantees a mass exodus that will dwarf anything seen in Africa. Yes there are people, including returning diasporans, doing very well in Nigeria, achieving a lot, contributing to progress and living a happy life in very safe surroundings with superb infrastructure. Those people are a tiny sliver of the population. The vast majority of people can't earn the resources to live a good middle class life in Nigeria because the existing feudal socialist political-economy is NOT set up for growing wealth and thus economic development. Nigeria from 2018 became the Poverty Capital of the World and now is I think the second poorest. Here's a World Bank Report that just dropped - https://www.nairaland.com/8416717/75.5-rural-nigerians-now-live The report noted that even before the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts to reduce extreme poverty had largely stalled.Nigeria is a hellscape. Most people with options would do well to avoid living there. Good Luck to Nigeria. |

IbeOkehie:Sorry I had to shorten the entire post as embedded links could result in a ban by the anti-spam bot. I was about to reply your earlier post, but since you have elaborated further with this post, let me give my two cents regarding the YouTubber. 1) Not everyone who will stay back in the abroad. As seen here: https://x.com/Nzuko_igboUK/status/1917341349604446713, many agreed that they will return to Nigeria. People return for various reasons, and as I have continually preached, the majority of this japa set did so when they were >25 years old. Being born and bred in a particular place for 25 years and moving to a new place brings a lot of challenges. 2) She lived in SAUDI ARABIA, not the UK. So, it is not an Anglophone nation just as Japan isn't one. In fact, yesterday, I was with two friends (male and female) who visited Nigeria last month and while they expressed their thorough dissatisfaction with how the country is, neither agreed to live here forever. They plan to return on a certain date. The male was delighted to see Black women with nice boobs, big yansh and beautiful legs - something he rarely come across while here. This is someone who was neutral regarding the racial group of the woman he would want to marry. But after his time in Nigeria (where he was born and bred for 25 years), he changed his mind to marry a Black woman. For the lass, this is someone who vowed never to return, but in less than two months of working in an international school in a faraway prefecture (state in Nigerian parlance), she has seen reasons why a co-scholar who was in a similar faraway prefecture returned to Nigeria jeje. So, she too has decided to return to Nigeria at a later date. 3) The YouTuber is most likely married with, say, two children or more. As I am, I am not interested in having more than one child. I came into this world to enjoy myself, not to raise plenty plenty children. So, I have always been indifferent regarding childcare in Nigeria. Also, if my generation is said to be well morally raised because our parents could flog us to obedience, how come the country isn't better? The main problem with Nigeria is the political structure, where there are many "nations" and as a result, enforcement of laws becomes difficult because they could be seen as an attack on participants of each "nation". 4) She used the word "regret" to draw the attention of viewers, but did not expressly state that she regrets her move. In fact, towards the end of the video, she expressed positive remarks for returning rather than negative ones. Yes, I watched it to the end and read ALL the comments. 5) She did not study abroad as you stated, but lived with her husband in SAUDI ARABIA. Also, she spent no more than three years in total. So she cannot be compared to persons who spent >10 years in other countries, especially Anglophones. 6) As you stated, many returnees are doing well. As much as we focus on those who had it bad when they returned, we should also look at those who succeeded. There are many such people, and most aren't that popular, but they are doing well. Yes, the stats might be low (no numbers yet), but their successes should be acknowledged as much as the failures of others. Just because plane crashes do not mean people should stop air travel. 7) Jamaica and Nigeria are not the only Black dominated countries. There are other options, so it is not a must to move to the UK to retire and die off. Also, people move to places for various reasons, and that is okay. Thank you. |

CoronaVirusPro:Not true...depends on which country, but the vast majority of Nigerian migrants to say US & UK are NOT going to move back to Nigeria. For one thing many rich Nigerians and senior government officials are now RETIRING to those countries, that is a telling sign of the times. Gerrard59:We've discussed this before on a DECADE OLD thread that surely has the benefits of long term hindsight - https://www.nairaland.com/959356/what-motivates-diasporans-relocate-back/4 Thanks for your extensive reply. The most important part is this - She lived in SAUDI ARABIA, not the UK. So, it is not an Anglophone nation just as Japan isn't one. In fact, yesterday, I was with two friends (male and female) who visited Nigeria last month and while they expressed their thorough dissatisfaction with how the country is, neither agreed to live here forever. Yes, it's very understandable that Nigerians who live in non-Anglo nations would return to Nigeria. I concede that most such migrants would likely Jakpada. The cultural gulf is too wide. As I've related, I grew up in Oguta, a resort town in Imo State. It was a small hidden paradise located NEAR a crude oil field. So it attracted a lot of Jakpada people in the 1970's and also a lot of Asian Indians, Europeans...especially Irish for some reason, and of course it had oil workers. The was a golf course, foreign hotels, big modern river boats and other quaint niceties. Though I lived in the poor side of town where open defecation was the norm. Yes, believe that. The public hospital was top notch too. Many of the Nigerian Jakpada were from non Anglo-Western nations. The gynecologist returned from Germany, the post master from Greece and there was one from Russia with his Russian wife. The veterinarian was returned from India. I know I've described this in earlier posts on this forum. I've met or talked with the children of the families that returned from Russia and Greece. They remigrated again and now live in USA and UK now respectively....with their parents. So I concede the point for emigres to non-Anglo nations. No Igbo will want to live in and retire in Saudi Arabia. Zero, never gonna happen, but it's likely in 30 years or so Nigeria will be kinda like Saudi Arabia or at least Sudan. As to Nigeria and Jamaica, it's a valid comparison. It's rare any Nigerian will permanently migrate to any Black dominated nation, the only exceptions might be Anglo controlled places like Namibia, Botswana and a few other places. Which again confirms that Anglos are the best nation builders. As for diasporans discussing "when will we return"....that's normal. It's ALWAYS a topic for polite convo, but this is the verifiable fact....few contemporary Nigerian migrants in Anglo-Western nations do the Jakpada anymore and many that do regret the experience and flee back to their new homes. They've learned from those that migrated without foreign citizenship in the 1970s and got stuck....yes, many got stuck and only got back out with great effort. The ones that stay on permanently in Nigeria have bountiful resources or high social & financial capital, they're rich. Few people are that rich in ANY nation anywhere. That's an existential truth. When democracy returned in 1999 the new Jakpada people returned with FOREIGN PASSPORTS and thus were able to escape once things started getting bad for Nigeria. There was a big wave of returnees even around 2007, 2008 to 2010 when Nigerians were gleefully and derisively predicting the destruction of the West and of course the great rise of Africa. The threads are still here on Nairaland for anyone to see In 2014 oil prices crashed, then APC won the Presidency and a great new wave of out migration started. The lessons have been learned. Very few migrants in Anglo-Western nations will voluntarily and permanently return to Nigeria. Because they know the cycle Yeah, I relearned something today. The Anglos are God's Own People. 🙏 God Save The King, God Bless the USA. Good Luck to Nigeria. |

As for me, I won't live in a 3rd world country again. I will only jakpada when I'm over 80 years and I will return straight to my village to live the remaining part of my life until God calls. But what I will never do again is to live permanently in a 3rd world when I'm still young. I just can't stand the underdevelopment abeg. Even if I live in banana island, I still won't be happy seeing the chronic underdevelopment of the society with no hope of even catching up to the rest of the world. For me, personal progress and comfort is good but what will make me happier is seeing Nigeria catch up with the rest of the developed world not living in one service estate with good infrastructures and forming king while your country men are suffering in darkness and still gloating over it. Unfortunately, Nigerians don't have any interest in collective good and this is why I have no interest in living in Nigeria again when I'm still young, I don't want my children to have that mindset. |
