Because of economising lol..... Perfect way to lay tiles is just applying an inch or half an inch of mortal behind the tiles..... Floors are to be screed and left to dry before laying the tiles with gums and comb trowell.... But you see engineers love cheap and affordable stuffs hence those naija procedures

I dey lay tiles on wood if the case needs.......

For one, there are very poor quality products in the Nigerian market being regarded as tile adhesive. Again, majority of the products in the Nigerian market are not suitable to block walls. So, it is recommended to plaster first if you want to use adhesive.

And, the nature of our blocks is not suitable for adhesive. Our blocks are porous and dry, so the blocks absorb the moisture content of the adhesive so fast that the adhesive dry out too soon to hold the tiles to the wall. To get around this, tilers are tempted to mix it a bit with cement to improve the moisture content.

In the West, adhesive are for non porous, smooth surfaces like plasterboard, cement board etc. For concrete walls, there are specialist adhesive for smooth concrete walls. Sometimes , depending, you apply PVA to the wall first before adhesive tiling to improve bonding.

I have worked with the tiles adhesive in Nigeria when doing dried ready mixed screeding. What they call tile adhesive is basically inert fillers and cellulose thickeners to allow proper flow of mortar and help retain water for proper hydration of cement.
To improve bonding, simply add pva as suggested.

There is tile surface finish they call RUSTIC FINISH in Nigeria. That is what most people use, even for outdoors. It is non-slip

If you are in Lagos, go to Orile (or your local tile market) and look and ask for Anti-Slip or 'Rough" tiles. The more uneven the surface the better for slip prevention.

Hello house,

Please share your thoughts and opinions about these plans before i pass to my architect for my drawings and progress

First picture is how i envision the architectural plan and house to look like. It will be 2 units of detached 3 bedroom flat separated by a wall, and all rooms having their own toilet. The plan is not drawn to scale, but each block of flat will have a width of 12meters and a length of 13.5meters. The shaded narrow rectangles depict the windows. The triangles with outward-curved sides depicts doors. T and VT means Toilet and Visitors' Toilet, respectively. WR means wardrobe. Same plan will be replicated for the second flat

The second picture is how i envision the house to be located in the compound, using the survey plan. The entire building (of 2 units of 3bedroom flats) will have a length of 27meters and a width of 12meters.There will be a setback of 1.5m from the fence on the right side of the building, a setback of 1.5m from the closes part of the fence at the back, a space of 6.5meters in front where cars will park (although we plan to build 2 shops that will likely a width of 3meters and a length of 8meters), and a space of about 3.3meters on the left side of the building.

Please, what do you guys think. Kindly advise me. I dont want to make a mistake

What about if the toilets and the kitchen walls are just rubbed with mortar by the bricklayer, will the tiles stay firm on it with just normal cement and sand or with only addesive?
