malel1:GEJ where there was no light in my area for months, one time? Ok o. . T-pain is still a bad leader though...but GEJ? Back under his time, we had the same complaints. Also, GEJ introduced the price controls and subsides regimen that prevent power companies from making a profit to fix things. In the name of helping the poor. As I said, I no support t-pain or gej or buhari o. |

I am just coming from a protest on the poor power supply to my estate and other estates within the same axis. This axis is within the heart of Abuja, I mean within the capital cities of Abuja, and this animals are talking about increasing the tariff. May God punish all those still supporting this useless administration. |

dustmalik:Amen, but the low tarrifs are why we don't have power. Also, large swathes of the country are made up of people who pay nothing for power, or pay something like N2000 monthly for power, when they use N50000 worth of power, or bypassing their meters. When a business has a lot of its customers underpaying, we end up with poor service. This government is useless, but the power problem predates them, and it is due to the above factors. |

nairalanda1:I disagree with you, its lack of policies to sanitize the whole system cos of greed of xtimated billings investors do not want to invest in the power sector they are just interested in what they can get out of it.<ore people use power than mobile phone in Nigeria. |

Nigeria and its cycle of government madness. 1. Politicians waste our dollar earnings on frivolity. 2. The government devalues the Naira 3. The government claims they’ve been paying subsidies. 4. The government increases prices of petrol and electricity. 5. The population protest that their wages are too low. 6. The government increases the minimum wage by a marginal amount. 7. Poverty increases amongst the population. 8. The politicians waste our dollar earnings on frivolity. 9. The government devalues the naira. 10. The government claims they’ve been paying subsidies. 11. The government increases the prices of petrol and electricity. 12. The population protest that their wages are too low. 13. The government increases the minimum wage by a marginal amount. 14. Poverty increases amongst the population. 15. The politicians waste our dollar earnings on frivolity. An endless cycle!! |

erico2k2:1. Estimated billings happen because of the subsides and the price controls inherent in subsides. The power companies engage in ripping off some of ther consumers, otherwise, their losses would be in excess of N10 trillion per annum (okay that's an exagerration, but for illustrative purposes). 2. Any investor invests with the idea of getting something out of it. It's kind of how the world rolls. Like I say here many times...people love to be paid, and people love to make profits. My grandfather was a big shares man, and he invested in shares because he expected something. It wasn't for fun. Unless you want something like the Soviet union was doing...free electricity. Which at the end meant huge debts, which eventually partly led to the collapse of the USSR. Electricity costs money. A lot of it. |

erico2k2:They are...plus it is not the disco's job to build power plants. That's the GENCOS. But because of poor revenue from tarrifs, and the government not coughing out subsides with ease (and thanks to very low oil prices this year, it looks bad for subsidy payments already)....discos do not earn enough revenue to pay GENCOS (That is also why discos reject power sometimes). So, GENCOS don't make the money to build power plants. And they cannot attract financing because revenues to the power setor are so low that no bank or financial institution would lend them money. Yes, no business has a bottomless pit of money. MTN and Airtel financed a lot of their telecom expansion here via loans and loans. And they got it because until 2013, government was not exercising price controls...and even when they did, the price controls did not force them into massive losses. BY the way, three discos are insolvent because of the low tarrifs they were forced to charge under government subsidy. |

Good thing I got a good solar system at home now, at least my income on buying fuel for generator has reduced. |

nairalanda1:1 Estimated billing is not limited to those with readable metres, some do not even have metres. Estimated billing is not a benchmark for Subsidy, we have xtimated billing system in the UK. You can only subsidise what you produce or buy, in Nigeria there is no electricity to buy or sell, we have next to minimum, so what's is being subsidised? The already epileptic power supply? 2 You are saying this is how the world roll, take the Telecoms as a case study. When it was sold, did the FG have to provide money for the investors to set up> No they went up with their own money to improve to the state they are now, they all have now migrated from Diesel power to Solar power eliminating the Nigerian factor .The way 4ward is make a clear policy to get rid of xtimated billings, make us all get prepaid metres and they can increase the price let us see if they wont be forced to improve the service cos as things stand, we pay way too much for power when you factor in cost of petrol. Diesel .There is no amount they can increase to that will dwarf what we already pay to power our homes when there is no electricity. |
| Re: Nigeria Can't Sustain Electricity Subsidies, Brace For New Tariffs – Adelabu by nairalanda1(m): 12:36pm On May 05, 2025 |
erico2k2:1. Estimated billing is for those without meters. Not for those with meters. Subsidy is for those not on band A. 2. Telecoms could afford to invest because they were allowed to set their prices. (Remember the good old days when a sim cost in the thousands of naira?). The power sector was NOT allowed to set its price...add the fact that large numbers of people do not pay their power bills...(you cannot use a phone for free...you have to recharge to use it, otherwise, your phone would be for recieving calls, and once you don't charge it after some months, the line would be declared dormant. And all data cheats were closed off centuries ago)...and you have a power sector operating at a loss. |

nairalanda1:ALl what you said is true to some xtent, however if the pricing and billing mechanism gets sorted out, they Investors can forecast howmuch they can make or cannot make. Take the west as a case study when it comes to Energy, the Gencos also have retail outlet. Also that TCN should be rid of.So concentration and emphasis should be geered 2wards billing and loss prevention. I work in this sector in the Uk(Energy) so I kinda have a clue to what they are facing, we faced thesame thing too in the Uk back in the days bypass and stuff. The solution is simpple, build it they will come approach. |

Gboss247:Thats is bad Economy, we in Nigeria want to copy the west but only copy half.Name one GENCO in the west that is Not a DISCO. I have done a lot of job for EDF, go check them out, you can even top up with them let alone distribute. The GENCO's need to acquire the Discos or given DISCO licence.Look at the other Energy Sector, Nobil,Shel and Texaco, are Gencos,Discos and even retailing. |
