This included ensuring I had digital copies of essential documents for upload. Specifically, I had scanned copies of my Birth Certificate, Proof of Origin, and the biodata page of my expired passport. Additionally, the online form required the input of my National Identification Number (NIN) digits. A crucial part of this stage was ensuring my passport photograph met the strict ICAO standards. To effortlessly achieve the required dimensions of 600x800 pixels, I found the online tool at https://webupon.com/blog/600x800_pixel-image-converter/ to be incredibly useful.

Initially, I booked my biometrics appointment for April 28, 2025. However, upon checking the application status, I noticed it hadn't been approved yet. Seeking clarification, I reached out to @nis_response on Instagram regarding the delay. The response was to be patient and await the approval.
Fortunately, the approval came through relatively quickly on April 30, 2025. I received an email notification confirming that my application had been approved, which was a welcome relief.

With the approval in hand, I proceeded to the Alausa Passport Office for my biometrics appointment on May 2, 2025. I ensured I had all the necessary documents printed, including the payment slip, the vetted/approved application slip, and the appointment slip. Of course, I also carried my expired passport with me.
During my time at the office, I observed the process and interacted with other applicants. It was reassuring to see that both those applying for fresh passports and those, like myself, seeking renewals were treated with the same level of attention and efficiency by the NIS officials. The process flowed smoothly for everyone I encountered. The checks and paperwork were handled efficiently, and the biometrics capture itself was quick. In total, I spent approximately 3 hours at the office and was done.

May 5, 2025, I tracked my application status online, and it displayed "PRODUCTION: Passport production is in progress." This indicates that my passport is now being manufactured.

Based on my experience, here are a few key takeaways that could be helpful for others undergoing passport application, especially for renewal:
Prepare digital copies of essential documents: Ensure you have scanned copies of your Birth Certificate (or Age Declaration Certificate), Proof of Origin, and the biodata page of your expired passport ready for uploading during the online application.

Do your application yourself.
Those documents will be forwarded to your email, which you can easily print out at any business centre.

Hello, I just wanted to ask after doing everything at the alausa office did they give you a document, because I was given one, and it said that the collection date is in october 20th, i finished the renewal process at the place on july 28th. Now this is going to be a long time, I just want to know if you got this same document and it also said that the collection date was also far away

Yes a piece of paper with the collection date on it.
But the date shouldn't be something to worry about as the passport will be ready before then, Did mine (biometric 3rd June)
Passport was ready by july
Got a message by text to come get my passport on 10th july

Go there on the date you picked,and you will be attended to,most people didnt get approval before proceeding for capturing.

Yes, I was given a slip that had the date of collection.
My candid advice: don't follow that date. Check the NIS office in about 4-6 weeks (from the time of your BIO), your passport should be ready.

I'd suggest you chill till it's approved. It shouldn't take long. And when it does, the approved copy will be sent to your email, print it and take it with you for your BIO.
You don't wanna get there with an unapproved document and some "officers" will now use this to extort you, especially if this is your 1st time.

Nobody will extort him..I have a personal experience concerning that and I was attended to at their office.

The immigration officers were really helpful and I didn't pay 1 kobo.

6 weeks after biometrics, I went to pick up my passport at the Alausa branch yesterday and was told it would take another 3 weeks cos I did it by myself (online)....but it can be ready next day if I pay for fast track.

No answer them oo....if you don't live far from Ikeja, you can visit there at least once in a week to see if your passport is ready and then you collect it.

Those people will just be looking for ways to exploit you once they get to know you did it online. Imagine one saying writing a local government is wrong, should be state. I told him the data was extracted from NIN. He said I should come back after capturing for them to help with it. On the waiting bench, they keep calling only those who registered through the officers. Online people that came as early as 8 am have not been called till now. All of us are here waiting like asylum seekers in a foreign land. Corruption is normal in Nigeria

This tip is for DIY Passport Renewal
The major hurdle I faced was uploading an image that meets ICAO Image guidelines.
I took the following steps to succeed with my image upload:
Download the app ReadID Me (Android/iOS)
Enable NFC on your phone (Phone must be NFC-enabled).
Enter your passport number, date of birth, and expiry date when prompted
Hold your phone flat against the biodata page until it reads (Only scans passports with NFC chips)
The app extracts and displays your stored biometric photo, which you can save
I shared what the app extracted via email so I could download my photo
Then I resized the photo to be 2x its size using Paint app on Windows PC
I uploaded the resized photo on Claude AI and asked it to process it properly according to the ICAO image guidelines for Nigeria passport portal.
I uploaded the image Claude AI generated on my passport application portal and it worked yaay!
The ICAO image issue almost drove me crazy lol because I think i tried everything
You need a NFC-enabled phone for this method.

Not even necessary.
Take any of your very recent clear picture showing your face and upload to Google Gemini in "create Image" mode and ask it to generate a ICAO International Civil Aviation Organisation compliant passport picture with white background.
When done upload the image and verify here: https://passport.immigration.gov.ng/image-compliance
When you go for biometrics/physical capture they will take them the live picture that will actually be on your passport.
