Recent appointments have predominantly favored individuals from the Yoruba ethnic group, particularly those with ties to Lagos State. For instance, the appointments of Wale Edun as Finance Minister and Folashodun Shonubi as Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria have been highlighted as examples of this trend. Critics argue that such appointments marginalize other ethnic groups and contravene the Federal Character Principle enshrined in Nigeria's Constitution. Section 14(3) of the Constitution mandates that the composition of the government should reflect the federal character of Nigeria, promoting national unity and ensuring no predominance of persons from a few states or ethnic groups.


Legal experts suggest that these actions may constitute violations of the Nigerian Constitution and the Federal Character Act. The Arewa Youths Integrity Network (AYIN), a prominent socio-political group from northern Nigeria, has condemned the President's appointments, particularly the selection of Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi as Acting Accountant General of the Federation. The group argues that such appointments demonstrate a disregard for other regions and ethnic groups, undermining the principle of federal character.

Similarly, the South-West APC Support Group has urged President Tinubu to broaden his appointments to include individuals from other states within the South-West region, emphasizing that the current trend risks creating an "all-Lagos affair" and does not reflect the diversity of the region.

The concentration of key government positions among individuals from a single ethnic group raises significant concerns about adherence to constitutional principles and the promotion of national unity. Legal experts and political groups are calling for a reevaluation of these appointments to ensure compliance with Nigeria's constitutional mandates. Failure to address these issues may lead to legal challenges and discussions about potential impeachment proceedings.
