Funds. Do you believe those political funds reach the grassroots? Go and ask why Afex is struggling with GTBank or why a lot of the organisations through which these loans are disbursed are having a hard time making payments.

Those who majorly supply the market are doing it out of pocket and that's why they would hike prices to recoup their investments.
dey play

If the government is truly subsiding farmers then the same govt has the right to demand the supply of products to the market. Just like every other business, commodity trading is a thing.

Is it farmers suffering from the harsh economy that would have enough cash to starve themselves without selling their grains while waiting for prices to increase?

Whatever happened to Government mop up during harvest season and storage in silos across the country?
The issue at play here is complex. Farmers often express concerns about farming equipment and fertilizers, and the government does provide assistance in this regard. However, this doesn't grant the government the authority to dictate how farmers handle their harvest. Consequently, farmers hoard up to 90% of their rice, reserving some for personal consumption and selling the rest in the market to purchase other necessities.

While the market isn't entirely devoid of rice, the limited supply leads to artificial scarcity, driving up the price. Farmers and profiteers then capitalize on this by selling their stored rice when prices reach a desirable level, benefiting at the expense of the average citizen. Despite the government's efforts to promote agriculture, they cannot directly prevent farmers from hoarding food crops. However, when such practices become detrimental, the government can open borders and offer waivers on imported rice to alleviate the impact of hoarding.

In this situation, Nigerians are ultimately the architect of their own predicaments due to the exploitative actions of certain individuals, such as farmers and profiteers.

Peace!

If it's hurting your business flood the market with your local product and sell at cheaper rate. So Nigerians should be suffering at expense of your personal business... Why should we buy bag of rice 100,000 in a country that claimed they have surplus of rice producers... The problem of these country starts from the head ..no price control they are doing everything opposite side. This country I give up on it
Price control is counter productive

Why is local production still expensive?
Cost of production in Nigeria is very high due to the absence of basic necessities for businesses to thrive!

The real problem is that the country had no business protecting rice production in the first place. Nigeria has no competitive advantage in producing it.

It is much cheaper to import it than to produce it locally.

Rather than the country focus on what it produces competitively such as cashew nuts, shea butter, sesame oil and so on, it wasted 100s of billions on rice. Cambodia grew its cashew nuts production from 100,000mt to over 700,000mt in over a decade. Nigeria probably still produces 100,000 tons of cashew over that period.

Borders were opened for Sorghum but not much was imported because it is a commodity that is grown quite well in the North.

Planting and milling rice is not our comparative advantage!
It's better to concentrate on where we have competitive advantage then. That's basic economics.

I for one will go to the street and protest if FG plans to favor Nigerian farmers again. Ha, they are not humans at all, bunch of wicked souls calling themselves farmers, bag of rice climbed N100k.
How can we be this wicked to ourselves, let government flood the market until no Rice farmer is in farming. No no no, if this is the only thing this government will solve, I will vote them come 2027.
Let other sector like cement whole salers, building materials and so many other products highjacked by middle men also watch out.

Is it the same local rice that are packaged in a foreign bags made in Nigeria here?

You are a closed with people who sales large quantities of rice or distributors, you will know that, no foreign rice much in Nigeria.

These people are packaging local rice in foreign bags.

Nigeria have local long rice planted in Nigeria that looks like foreign rice.

We have different rice here.

Almunjid:
It would be better for import waivers to negatively impact local rice mills rather than allowing greedy rice farmers to exploit consumers. I cannot understand why Nigerians often display such callousness towards one another. If the government were to close the border, the price of rice would skyrocket, and farmers would be content to see consumers struggle. Conversely, if the government sought to relieve citizens of the high cost of food crops, farmers would express dissatisfaction. In this context, it seems more reasonable for farmers alone to face challenges rather than the entire country enduring the consequences of exorbitant rice prices.

Peace!
God bless you for this sir

Let those useless rice farmers continue to suffer for now. After all, we didn't see any impact when Buhari s government pampered them by closing the borders and removing waivers

It's better the citizens can afford to eat rice from importation than paying through the nose just to allow these selfish, useless rice farmers to grow

They only flooded the market with stone ravaged, low quality, high priced rice
