We need to know that these are spiritual positions tied to culture.

Wether anyone likes it or not, the Papacy is as cultural as it is spiritual. The Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic Church, which began in Europe and was basically a European Empire before spreading out to the rest of the world.

I am not surprised in any way that Popes are largely European.

At the time when Black Popes(3 at least) were elected around 200-300AD, skin color mattered not at all.
Men were known by where they came from..
Roman, Gaul, Greeks,Thracian, Moor etc...nothing like whiteman, Blackman, brown man.
Race as regards to color was a recent invention back in the 17th century.

There is no concept of Pope in Christianity, it's a Catholic concept, that's all I know. This is all religion and tradition and it's to be separated from the Church.
