According to UNESCO Policy Paper 24 (2016), “quality education should be delivered in the language spoken at home.” However, many students learn mathematics in English, even though they speak Hausa at home. This means that children often do two tasks simultaneously: struggling to understand and decode English words while also trying to grasp math concepts. In contrast, learning in Hausa allows students to focus on mathematical ideas rather than English vocabulary.
