After losing the war, with the stigma attached to losing a war, losing all u had to the state, they saw u as second class citizen and denied u political positions, it was normal for those outside their main region of South east to also deny them to be safe else, they will suffer serious political isolation.
Well, decades later, many have started accepting the truth and admitting their true ancestry. A very good example is the Igbanke people in Edo. It is a matter of time as my generation is well read, we will align better than our fathers generation that were timid and never asked questions.
