Engineer Conrad Terhide Utaan, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairmanship aspirant from Benue State, has raised concerns over the party’s future, warning that without bold steps to resolve internal disputes, the PDP may face total collapse.

Speaking on the growing crisis within the party, Utaan urged PDP governors to show greater courage in addressing the leadership issues surrounding acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu.

He stressed the need for urgent reconciliation between the Atiku Abubakar and Nyesom Wike factions.

“If the Atiku bloc exits, there will be nothing left. The Wike bloc is already embedded in the APC,” Utaan cautioned.

On his part, Dr. Sam Amadi, director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, added that the party cannot maintain its credibility as an opposition force while high-profile members openly support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said: “To be a credible opposition, the PDP must expel members working for President Tinubu’s re-election. “You can’t have a leading opposition figure actively campaigning for the incumbent president. It makes the PDP look like a joke.”

He called on PDP governors to assert leadership and clean house, warning that failure to act could render the party irrelevant ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Then, the race began in earnest for three years now, reaching a frenzy with the works of the two PDP committees on zoning. The first was the Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi committee on the zoning of the PDP party offices. The Ugwuanyi committee quickly told the world the committee’s assignment did not cover zoning the office of the president. Though this was true, the question is: why didn’t the Ugwuanyi committee zone the PDP chairmanship to the North without aligning it to the divide that would produce the PDP presidential flag-bearer? The second committee headed by Gov Samuel Ortom of Benue state was specifically on the zoning of the presidential ticket and, with the votes of the representatives of all the 17 Southern states without any exception, the Committee unanimously recommended throwing open the PDP presidential ticket, which the PDP NEC simply upheld.

One thing irrefutably stands out – Wike shot himself in the leg. Here was a man who had an overarching influence on both committees but could not insist that the ticket be zoned South. Many had wondered why? The reason is also relatively in plain sight: the Southeast factor. As the clamour for zoning of the presidential ticket of the PDP to South reached its crescendo, many had pointed out the fact that though the PDP Constitution had prescribed zoning of the office of the president to be between North and South since the South-west and South-south had taken their turns in producing the president and the vice in this current dispensation in the persons of Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, zoning this time around, should not just be to the South but the Southeast.

Atiku Abubakar went a step further by offering to step down from the race if it would be agreed that the touted zoning to the South would mean micro-zoning to the Southeast. Wike and the rest could not take the Atiku challenge maybe because Atiku would likely back Peter Obi, who was his vice-presidential running mate in 2019 and an ally. The prospects of Peter Obi picking the ticket if PDP zoned South was so real compelling Wike to go for an open contest, believing he could pick it up ahead of Atiku, Tambuwal and Bala Mohammed, given his large war chest.

For my friends abroad my age and younger most of them don’t even need to know who is running for what as long as it’s the Green Party they know what the party and most people in it stand for, if it’s republican even you Nigerians know what that party thinks about immigration, anti LGBTQ, taxes, anti gun control, no matter who is president you know what they will do and what they will not do, same goes for democrats you know they will be pro lgbtq, pro immigration, etc.

But you guys keep telling Atiku faction, Wike faction, Tinubu faction because the only thing your political parties care about is getting people in power regardless of the individuals ideologies as a result the political parties have no ideologies, no identity that is why Wike can move from PdP to APC seamlessly, Obi can move from PDP to Labour Party, Atiku can move from Nnpp, to Pdp to APC and back to pdp

Wike must go . For those of you always calling Atiku's name, I asked, is it wrong to be ambitious? When Atiku wanted to be president in 2015, he left the PDP to APC... He came back to the PDP before 2019 general elections. He didn't remain in a party and be openly working against the party. Wike on the other hand is just bitter about the 2022 PDP primaries lost to Atiku. Wike was too confident of picking the tickets that he started seeing himself as the presidential candidate, Wike had over 500 buses/cars for his campaign. Wike didn't see anything wrong when the contest was thrown open because in his mind he has already won..
Even if Tambuwal had not stepped down, Atiku would still have won the primaries. Wike is misbehaving because he has the backing of Tinubu and the Court. PDP, LP, NNPP and even SDP might not have presidential candidates or will have weak candidates in 2027. Atiku didn't destroy the PDP in 2015, nobody did. Many Nigerians supported Buhari and the APC in 2016 because of the insecurity and corruption in GEJ government But unfortunately Buhari became the Biggest Fraud in the history of Nigeria.
