2025 UTME: JAMB Plans Remedial Measures Amid Review Calls by Great100000(op): 11:22am On May 13, 2025
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has announced a review of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination results following a wave of “unusual complaints” from candidates after the results were released on Friday, DEBORAH TOLU-KOLAWOLE reports

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Friday officially released the results of the 2025 Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination to the public.

Earlier before the release, the Board released official statistics of the results.

According to the examination agency, a total of 1,955,069 results were processed out of which Only 4,756 candidates (0.24%) scored 320 and above, considered top-tier performance.

7,658 candidates (0.39%) scored between 300–319, bringing the total for those who scored 300 and above to 12,414 candidates (0.63%).

Also, 73,441 candidates (3.76%) scored between 250 and 299 while 334,560 candidates (17.11%) scored between 200 and 249.

A total of 983,187 candidates (50.29%) scored between 160 and 199, which is widely regarded as the minimum threshold for admissions in many institutions.

In the same vein, 488,197 candidates (24.97%) scored between 140 and 159, 57,419 candidates (2.94%) scored between 120 and 139, 3,820 candidates (0.20%) scored between 100 and 119, and 2,031 candidates (0.10%) scored below 100.

Over 75 per cent of all candidates (1.5 million) scored below 200, average score seeing as the examination is graded over 400.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, while reacting to the results said that the performance statistics for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination are in line with results recorded over the past 12 years.

He emphasised, however, that such results are not unusual and align with historical patterns.

“This is not peculiar to this year. The performance statistics are consistent with those of the last 12 years,” he said.

In 2024, 76 per cent of candidates who sat the UTME scored less than 200 points.

In 2022, 1.3 million candidates out of 1.7 million –or 78 per cent– who sat the 2022 UTME scored below 200, according to JAMB.

In 2021, only 803 candidates out of 1.3 million – or 0.06 per cent – who sat the 2021 UTME scored above 300.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, while also reacting to the results, said the high failure rate in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination was clear evidence that the government’s anti-malpractice measures were yielding results, especially within the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board system.

Candidates, parents allege discrepancies

But candidates and parents have continued to allege discrepancies in the released results with some calling on the Board to release the modalities with which it scored each candidate.

Some candidates have rejected their results, insisting they do not reflect their actual performance.

A group of candidates, numbering over 8,000, have reportedly submitted complaints regarding technical glitches experienced during the examination.

The candidates, their families and concerned Nigerians have also taken to social media to express concerns over the results insisting that the released results do not reflect their performances using the hashtag #thisisnotmyresult to protest their scores.

One social media user, @Pennyfabz, who scored 156 expressed concern, saying she had previously scored 285 in the previous edition of the UTME.

“Dear @JAMBHQ, Something is wrong with my result. I’m very confident that this is not what I’m meant to get. Please look into this matter. I’m seriously comforting myself that everything is okay. Please listen to our plea. I can’t go from 285 to 156,” the candidate posted on X.

Another post by @quwam001 reads: “Dear @JAMBHQ, Something is seriously wrong with the recently released UTME results. These scores do not reflect the abilities, efforts, or track record of our students.

“Egbaze Victoria scored 295 in last year’s UTME, and now she’s being told she scored 132? And many others.”

A candidate who sat the examination at a CBT centre in Maitama, Abuja, told The PUNCH, “During the examination, for my Use of English, I noticed that some of my questions were missing. I raised the alarm, and I wasn’t the only one with the issue. When my result came out, I scored 170. JAMB has not addressed the missing questions.”

Another candidate who wrote the exam on April 26 said she was shocked by her result.

“Last year I scored 287, this year I got 173. Many others who wrote on the same day complained that their English questions were incomplete. This result is not mine.”

A parent also called for a review, saying: “We demand a remark from JAMB. These are exceptional students scoring below 200. Many complained of incomplete questions and other technical issues. JAMB has said nothing. This cannot be swept under the rug.”

The CEO of Educare, Alex Onyia, noted that students have been demoralized over the results. He noted that over 11,000 candidates have filed complaints via a link he posted on X.

“JAMB is messing with these students destiny. The energy is low nationwide amongst students. They can’t write WAEC with this level of energy.

“We need all students mark-sheet released to them and also exams on 24th, 25th, 26th and 28th of April must be thorough investigation quickly. 26th April is the worst of them all with all its incomplete questions and blank questions.

“11,467 complaints have been filed already. Students may have to rewrite JAMB at JAMB’s own expense.

“JAMB may have to publicly apologise to all these Nigerian students.”

On Monday, JAMB announced that it was reviewing the UTME results.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, the board said it is fast forwarding its annual system review, a comprehensive post-mortem of the examination process, as a result of the ‘significant volume of unusual complaints’ that followed the release of the 2025 UTME results on Friday.

“If it is determined that there were indeed glitches, we will implement appropriate remedial measures promptly, as we do in the case of the examinations themselves,” the board said

The board said it is particularly concerned about the unusual complaints from a few states within the federation.

According to the statement, the board is scrutinising these complaints in detail to identify and rectify potential technical issues.

JAMB said the annual review encompasses three key stages: registration, examination, and result release.

It explained that during the examination, JAMB ensures that every candidate is afforded the opportunity to sit the test, and should any technical issues arise, the board reschedules the examination for affected candidates.

JAMB said experts have been engaged to assist in the review.

The experts are: “Members from the Computer Professionals Association of Nigeria, Chief External Examiners, who are heads of tertiary institutions, the Educational Association and Research Network in Africa, measurement experts, and Vice Chancellors from various institutions.”

A public interest law firm, the Chambers of Evans Ufeli, has threatened legal action against the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board following what it described as the widespread failure and systemic breakdown during the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

In a petition addressed to the Registrar of JAMB, the firm, led by Evans Ufeli, cited numerous cases of technical malfunctions, poor logistics, and alleged safety breaches that, it claimed, severely compromised the credibility and fairness of the examination process.

Ufeli, who signed the petition in his capacity as both a legal practitioner and education advocate, alleged that the conditions under which the 2025 UTME was conducted rendered it unjust and detrimental to the mental well-being and academic future of many candidates.

One of the major issues raised in the letter was the early scheduling of exams where candidates, many of whom are minors, were reportedly instructed to arrive at examination centres as early as 6am.

This, the firm argued, subjected young students to undue stress and physical exhaustion before their exams even began.

“This instruction caused anxiety, fatigue and confusion among 15 to 16-year-olds who were already grappling with exam tension,” the letter noted.

Beyond scheduling, the petition alleged that some candidates were reported missing during the course of the examination period. The firm described this as a serious failure on JAMB’s part to guarantee the safety and security of young Nigerians placed in its care.

“Such incidents expose deep flaws in the planning and execution of the UTME and raise serious concerns about the ability of JAMB to safeguard the lives of the candidates,” Ufeli stated.

The firm also pointed to lengthy delays in the commencement of exams at many centres. These delays, according to the letter, led to heightened anxiety levels among candidates and, in some cases, disrupted exam schedules altogether.

In light of the above, the law firm demanded that JAMB immediately cancel the 2025 UTME results and conduct a fresh round of examinations under improved conditions.

“This examination, as conducted, failed to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and transparency. It must be set aside and a new one organized under conditions that meet acceptable standards,” the firm asserted.

Ufeli warned that if JAMB fails to act on the demands, his chambers will have no choice but to seek redress in court.

“Should JAMB fail to address these grave concerns, we will be compelled to initiate legal proceedings to protect the rights and futures of the affected candidates,” he wrote.

A few days ago, when I pointed out the inconsistencies in the JAMB results, some dingbats turned it into a tribal spat.

Now, we can all see that JAMB is not a reliable organization.

Meanwhile, Minister of Education, that dumb@ss said that students fail because anti-cheating measures are working. Oponu rada rada.

Re: 2025 UTME: JAMB Plans Remedial Measures Amid Review Calls by Bobloco:
All institutions under the Tinubu regime have become a disgrace.

JAMB, which used to be one of the few remaining institutions with a semblance of credibility, has now been infected by Tinubu's calamitous Emilokan-driven tribal and ethnic bigotry. It is now a shadow of its former self, gone to the dogs.

Last year, during the Mmesoma debacle, instead of handling the issue professionally and on an individual basis as an educational institution should, JAMB played the ethnic card, denigrating the tribe the young girl came from. That was when I realized it was all over.

This year, unable to find another “Mmesoma,” they released a list of states with the highest number of malpractice cases, unsurprisingly placing Anambra State at the top.

When Nigerians criticized the exam scheduling, particularly the early accreditation time of 6:30 a.m. and raised concerns about the safety of teenagers aged 15 to 17 who must travel long distances to take their exams, JAMB failed to respond professionally. Instead, in the usual fashion of the Tinubu-led APC government, they singled out Peter Obi for a response.

This is the legacy Tinubu is leaving behind: one of deepening ethnic and tribal bigotry.

Meanwhile the senate should extend JAMB results to be valid for 5 years
Re: 2025 UTME: JAMB Plans Remedial Measures Amid Review Calls by Eriokanmi:
The best they can do is reduce the admission cut off scores for universities and ensure every institution complies. Since the result is so bad as seen, the worst in decades, jamb should just reduce university admission cut off for major curses to 150. Let the post UTME now decide who's capable enough to earn a slot in their respective courses of study.

Seriously, I don't see any big deal in this. In my time, if you scored 220 for instance, you're a guru. This was before the advent of the Internet. Their marking scheme was so strict. If you don't understand any question, just leave it jejelly because if you attempt it wrongly, your mark would be deducted from those you got correctly. Waec back then wasn't easy to come by. If you managed to have an A in core subjects, na celebration galore. Combination of waec results used to be order of the day, even for major courses. In brochures you'd see 5 o'level credit passes at a sitting or 6 credit passes in 2 sittings. Nothing like post utme. Even in law, P was allowed in maths.

But nowadays, you see students scoring As all through. Marking schemes had been adjusted over time to favour a particular region or tribe, which is part of what's affecting the standard of education in Nigeria. In maths for instance, those marking waec back then would be interested only in the final answer. If the workings were supposed have 5 steps and you got the last answer wrongly, especially where they're asking you to round off your answer to the nearest whole number and you got it wrongly, they'd not spare you, except the marker just wanted to show mercy on you and used his pen to help you write the correct answer, then, mark it. Otherwise you'd miss the whole question and that's the reason we hardly saw candidates who had an A1 in maths back then. But nowadays, maths marking schemes are in steps same as other subjects that involve calculations. Even if you got the final answer wrongly but you got the steps correctly, you'd still earn some marks.

I wish we could go back to that era. Our system of education can be overhauled if they could start from that level.

JAMB has always been a fraudulent institution that award marks as they deem fit. Maybe it’s better now because it is CBT but it has always been a rogue organization.

I personally confirmed that in 2012. Writing JAMB after graduation to pursue a different degree. I saw 60 in subjects I was 100% sure, going by my review, that I couldn’t have scored less than 95. In literature-in-English, a subject I was 100% sure I couldn’t have scored more than 50 seeing I had left 50% of the questions UNTOUCHED (recommended text section), I was given a score above 80.

How possible is it to score above 80 in a subject in which you left more than half of the questioned, unanswered?

Someone that I know got 300+ in the mock exam and scored 156 or so in the actual exam. Is that possible?
