Man shares how his dad sabotaged a house agent’s attempt to ch3at a couple who wanted to rent his flat.

So, my dad had a 2-bedroom flat for rent at #600k. A guy came to check it out, claiming it was for his sister. He wanted to pay, but dad insisted on meeting the sister first.

Next day, the "sister" shows up with her fiancé, saying they're getting married next month and need the place urgently. Dad asked how much they were told to pay in total, and they said #950k. Dad just laughed, knowing the guy was an agent. He told them to pay #350k as his wedding gift to them.

They left happy.

Now the agent came this morning, fuming and shouting at my dad for "ruining his business." Baba just sat there laughing. 😂

Not every hustle deserves protection, some deserve disruption.

The additional N350,000 added to the rent is likely to be for Agency, Agreement and refundable deposit.
Now that he has given them his house without agreement and caution, hope he will not complain if something is damaged tomorrow? Secondly, whenever there is any trouble with the tenant, hope he will also not call the agent to intervene?
The truth is that the additional fees are for the professionals he engaged or how does he intend to pay for the services of the Agent that brought the tenant and the lawyer that will prepare the agreement? The caution deposit is for a security that the landlord will keep to be refunded whenever the tenant is moving out if nothing is damaged.

Let me state that:
I am not an agent
I am a lawyer and I have practiced law for at least 21 years.
I am a landlord in Lagos and Ogun State.
I have about 23 tenants in my residential and commercial apartments.
I also own and developed a gated estate.
Agents have stolen and diverted my money before.
What I posted above is just for educational purposes and what I have experienced in my over 21 years of practice as a lawyer and dealing on properties.

I understand your anger and I expect the insult I got as a result of my post especially from people who do not understand how the business works.

I have worked with several agents and even though the story is not complete, I only brought out the possibilities for educational purposes.

House agents are a very greedy, lazy and wicked people. They need to be checked by the government as their excesses are getting out of hands.
Then when I was house hunting, I got referred by a personal friend to a 3-bed apartment for 1.2M which was undergoing a renovation. I even saw the property manager who was ready to accept payment immediately. 3 days later, one house agent on my contact list put that same property on his whatsapp status for 1.6M. I was like what manner of madness is this? I got to learn that what these guys do is, they go and talk to landlords to inflate their prices to satisfy their own greed. They are the reasons for the excessive rent costs in big cities like Lagos, PH, Abuja, etc.

It is high time all these house agents be scraped in Nigeria.

Imagine making profit more than the owner of the house just because you brought someone to rent a house.

A website/app should be developed in Nigeria to link renters and leasers, thereby cutting off these greedy house agents.
