While I appreciate her love for the kids education, why didn't she take the Chickens to the market and sell to pay for the school fees or is there something I'm not getting here? Many of us went through such that our parents have to sell their valuables to pay for school fees.

I've also sold some valuables to pay for my children's tuition!
Perhaps, if she takes it to the market, they will probably be pricing it at ridiculous price since they know that she needs the money desperately, the Chickens cam also be useful for the Agric department of the school...

I'm not making fun of you, I am just laughing at the concept of free school

IN America, Priscilla, Mark Zuckerberg's wife, set up a free school. EVERYONE was welcome, she employed very good teachers, and a lot of students passed through that school, rich and poor. Many benefited (one rich celeb who enrolled her child there said her child had thrived in the school).

After over ten years, she closed the school. Reason, it was draining the money. Her money, her husband's money.

Nothing like free school. You still have to pay taxes, pay teachers salaries, pay for books and equipment, and pay for maintenance. And unless you got a bottomless pit of money, or you have a foundation where rich people are donating billions in dollars and euros, you cannot run a free school. School dey cost money. At the end, you go charge fees, or you will drain your money sponsoring the school, or you will cose it down.

You just said "Adiedo mixed Secondary School". Where is Adiedo, Nigeria or where? And how do we help this woman when we don't venture know where is Adiedo in Nigeria.

..she should enrol them in government school which is much cheaper or free ..free education.. because next term or year the private school will still demand for school fees from those students

You are used to suffering, so this act does not move you anymore. For some of us, it create tears in our eyes. Thankfully, Primary and Secondary Education is free in my village, so we can not see this happening.

This is heartwarming

Grandmother's love is pure, unwavering and unmatched, an anchor of warmth and wisdom that shapes generations. her grandchildren will never forget her.

I miss my grandmother

Here's is the school principal confirming the story

this is not heartwarming. this is evidence that the economy of Nigerian has gone to shit and there is no low it cannot go.

what is next?

Grandmother bring another grandchild to serve as a slave while the other ones continue school?

Wow super grandma, this is the high of it and I'm very sure that the grand child is really doing well in his studies because those type of kids you can go extra miles to do what the Grandmum did.

Super grandma I pray God will keep her so that she will see him succeed in life and I also pray that the child wouldn't abandon his Grandmum when he later become somebody in life..

Everyone knows this is a stunt intended to draw public sympathy and have celebrities mine clout by falling over themselves to not only pay the fees but offer scholarship and donate an entire poultry to her etc etc.
The real people to do charity for are those who do nothing to draw attention to it.
You should seek them out and help them.
I disagree, sometimes you have to pull the strings to get your needed attention. Blind Bartimus and the woman with the issue of blood is an example.

That story is both heartbreaking and powerful. It highlights the deep sacrifices some families make for education, especially in places where poverty is widespread and school fees are a burden. The grandmother bringing live chickens shows the value she places on her granddaughter’s future it’s an act of love, desperation, and determination.

At the same time, it raises serious questions about access to education. No child should be sent home because their family can’t afford to pay. It’s a reminder that education, though often said to be a right, still isn’t truly accessible to all.

Good morning Nairaland family,

I’m an HND graduate in Accounting, currently seeking job opportunities where I can contribute meaningfully and grow professionally whether within the accounting field or other areas where my skills are transferable. I would sincerely appreciate any leads, recommendations, or guidance.
My location is Akwa Ibom State.

Thank you in advance!
Won't it be more powerful for the grandmother to lead others as Fela's mom did to ensure that her local and state government officals prioritise their commonwealth for employing teachers, accountants, administrators, lab attendants, librarians, coaches etc to make primary and secondary schools free for all children huh

Would this be an issue if we don't hail our tribal leaders who loot money that should make education free for all children, with matching funds from the UBEC established by PDP's Obasanjo/Atiku administration in 1999?

Do you know if Akwa Ibom also has less than 5% public schools owned and run by government? Or the state has more than 5%?

Ratio of public to private schools in Lagos State is one to 22 ― Commissioner
September 4, 2022

The Lagos State government has said the ratio of public to private schools at both primary and secondary school levels in the state is one to 22.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, gave the revelation in her remark at the 2022 edition of the Total School Support Seminar Exhibition (TOSSE) held at Oregun in Ikeja between Thursday and Friday.

I pray someone builds a school for free in that axis for them. With Jesus Christ the World is a better place
Is that how you simply prayed for success in your school exams without studying to disprove God's commandment that we must work and sweat to earn a living, which is the same thing as faith without works is dead.

Maybe there isn't a bottomless pit of money to run a school but there could be an endless source of human contribution or a community that puts hands together for things to work cheaper and better for everyone. A free school still needs money to run but imagine a community based school where everyone that lives there, works or is from there contributes at least 1000 Naira a month and let's say there a 1000 people doing this, thats 1 million naira a month, which can take care of things although not all but remember another million if not more is still coming for the coming months, like this the financial weight is less on people.

The more people who contribute to the school the better for everyone involved. If say 1 million people contribute 1000 naira each for their community school, guess how much? That's 1 billion naira a month, the school can even offer higher class education and activities that who knows, can rival more expensive schools, why?

The problem is

1. Schools need upgrading

2. Teacher's salaries need increasing

3. Schools need maintenance

4. Taxes have to be paid

5. eTC ETC.

Contributions therefore will increase, and that's when you hear people complaining of poverty.

(There is a reason why most community schools are not neccesarily the best.).

So... she didn't place same value on her grandson? The post said "grandchildren" and even in the picture (let me assume you do not have the data to watch the video completely) a boy and girl (her grandkids) were seated with her and the live chickens on the floor.

1. Does the upgrade happen everyday? Isn't this planned for and carried out appropriately?

2. Yeah sure but in this country people still work in schools that pay next to nothing and they have seen little or no increase for years. The teachers children can also be pupils or students in that same school thereby reducing their financial burden.

3. I'd classify this with number 1, you don't maintain a school every day or every month. If there's something to be carried out we plan for it as far as funding is coming. There'd be a board to oversee this.

4. The school can be registered as a Nonprofit organization under Nigerian law and be exempted from tax.
